Howdy pard,

Well, a very merry Christmas to you and yours. I’ve got some Christmas cheer for you right here in this bottle… grab a glass and I’ll top you up, cowboy.

I’m playin’ Santa Claus this month, with a huge collection of free books and huge discounts for you to help yourself to. I’ll share the tale of stagecoach robber Black Bart Boles, as well as all the names that folk call whiskey across the width and breadth of the West. I’ve got a documentary exposing the myths of Little Bighorn and General Custer, and a special Christmas cowboy recipe for beer bread pudding.

Now, have another whiskey with me. As my ol’ grandpa used to say, it’s Christmas – it’s time to be “grinnin’ like a jackass eatin’ cactus’.

Stagecoach robber ‘Black Bart’ Boles

For a man who wrote poetry, was deathly afraid of horses, and maintained an air of politeness and sophistication while robbing stagecoaches, Charles Boles seemed an unlikely choice as a highwayman.

With his luxuriant white mustache and gold watch chain, he seemed a model ‘gentleman bandit’ and looked every inch a successful San Francisco businessman. But as ‘Black Bart’, Boles quickly became a legend.

‘Non-stop cowboy action’

Thank you to everyone who picked up a copy of Redding’s Fandango – the reviews have been great:

“The story starts fast and runs hard. Six-shooters, Winchesters and Bowie knives are the tools of the trade and they get well used. If Sol didn't have bad luck, he would have no luck at all. This story brings the non-stop cowboy action all the way to the end.”

The book is also now available on major ebook retailers - or check out the extra special edition containing exclusive content and a story epilogue not available from other retailers, delivered by Bookfunnel, and readable on any device.

Did you know?

Whiskey was the social lubricant of choice in towns, saloons, mines and around campfires across the Old West. It’s no surprise that it was given more names than a dog had ticks. Old West slang terms for whiskey included: bottled courage, bug juice, coffin varnish, fire water, gut warmer, joy juice, neck oil, nose paint, tarantula juice, tonsil varnish, and tornado juice.

Gunslinger Matthew Slade

I’m proud to recommend a great western adventure that came across my desk – Gunslinger Matthew Slade - The Complete and Unabridged Box Set, by Sugar Lee Ryder.

Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):

"The open prairies and gas-lit streets of the 1870’s Old West provide the backdrop for a new hero: gunslinger, tracker, and private eye Matthew Slade.

The Gunslinger Matthew Slade - A Complete and Unabridged Classic Western Action and Adventure Series includes Books 1-14. These stories take readers to the bustling back streets of San Francisco’s Chinatown, the fledgling Napa Valley wine country, and the sprawling ranchlands of Montana.

Each time, Matthew Slade – formerly the Pinkerton Detective Agency’s best investigator, tracker, and gun-hand – does what he does best: Save friends, battle foes, and bring justice where he can."

Battlefield Detectives: Exposing The Myths Of Little Bighorn And General Custer

The story of Custer's Last Stand - a tiny band of brave American cavalrymen holding out against bow-and-arrow and tomahawk-wielding warriors - is perhaps the most potent symbol of the legend of the American Frontier.

The site of Little Bighorn has been researched like no other American battlefield. Using the results of this scientific research, you will learn about the myths about Little Bighorn, revealing that there was no last stand just as there were, in fact, few bows, arrows or tomahawks.

Cowboy beer bread pudding

Christmas dinner is nothing without dessert, but cowboy chef Kent Rollins has got dessert covered this year with the most delicious beer bread pudding. He uses dark beer as the best option, and hot dog buns because they’re very light and fluffy. Watch him make it here:

Ghosts of Texas

I’m proud to recommend a great western adventure that came across my desk – Ghosts of Texas, by Tommie Wendall.

Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):

"Leaving the death and bloodshed of the War Between the States behind him, Martin searches for his lost family. When an old Ranchero, Luis Alvarado, claims him as his grandson, Martin finds himself hated by the ranch hands and faced with an aloof, but highly critical grandfather.

As Martin finds peace working for the Terraza family, he learns of a secret buried in the family past that binds his loyalty to them, but when Alvarado's men rekindle the feud and draw Martin back into the blood, violence, and fear he wanted to leave behind in the war and leaving him with the emptiness of dying without ever knowing his true family."
