Howdy pard,
Set yourself down here and take a load off. It’s hot outside and you look parched – you're welcome to share whatever I have… as long as its whiskey or pork and beans. That’s all I have left.
Boy, have I got an update for you. I’ve got a wagon load of mystery, suspense and adventure stories that won’t cost you a cent. I’ve got the latest hearsay about that Deadwood rogue Al Swearengen and his painted ladies…and some good gossip about some pilgrims who rode the ol’ Jim Bridger trail. I’ve got some dandy examples of Old West slang to share, and a recipe for that cowboy breakfast favorite, sourdough pancakes.
Wait one goldarned minute – you’ve finished your glass of rotgut. Here, let me top you up and fill your plate with beans and pork. As my ol’ grandpa used to say, ‘you're so thin you could take a bath in a shotgun barrel’.

Al Swearengen and his Gem Theatre
Pimp, pioneer, entrepreneur, Old West legend. Al Swearengen was all these and more. One of the most ruthless, violent and outrageous characters ever to grace the American Frontier, Swearengen thrived in the lawless streets of Deadwood, South Dakota. For twenty-two years, Swearengen’s Gem Theater was one of the most popular entertainment venues (brothels) in Deadwood.
Today, all traces of his pride and joy, the Gem, have disappeared. However, despite (or perhaps due to) his shady dealings, violent temper and willingness to go to any lengths to prevail, Swearengen carved himself a place in the folklore of the West which has stood the test of time. Did you know?
The Wild West had a language all its own and many phrases are still in use today. “Bellyaching” means to complain. “Caterwauling” also refers to complaining, or to terrible singing. A “fandango” is from the Spanish word and means big party with lots of dancing. If you have a desire for something, it’s called a “hankering” and someone who is snooty or arrogant would be called “highfalutin.” If something “doesn’t amount to a hill of beans,” it’s essentially worthless, and to be angry is to be “hoppin’ mad.”
Lightbulb Moments in Human History
