Howdy pard,

Good to see you again. Don’t be shy – I kept a seat warm for you, right next to me. The whisky’s good, the viddles are warm and the company ain’t half bad either!

I heard you were short of something to read, so I brought along a big bag of books. Pick as many as you want, there’s something you’ll like, I’m sure. Don’t worry, they’re all on the house. I also heard some interesting scuttlebutt about the history of that saddle you rode in on… well. Not just yours, but every saddle across the West. There’s an update on that ol’ scallywag Geronimo, some great updates about how the landscapes across the West influenced how this wide land of ours was settled, and also a recipe I picked up for cowboy campfire tacos. Talk about tasty!

Listen to me blather on, and you with an empty glass. Here, have another. As my ol’ grandpa used to say, “hard work beats talent when talent don’t work hard.”

Old West saddles

The western saddle and the cowboy who rides in it are an inescapable part of the American story. For months on end on long trail drives a cowboy would be in his saddle from before sunup, right through the day and often half the night as well. When he finally found time for rest, his saddle often served as his pillow.

A cowboy’s saddle was indispensable. A cowboy in the old American West could not work without one. Find out more about the thousand-year history of the Old West saddle:

Did you know?

Native American leader Geronimo fought against both Mexico and the United States due to their moves to expand into Apache tribal lands in what is now Arizona. He led several raids against both nations after his wife and children were killed by Mexican troops in the 1850s. He earned his name for his bravery in battle, where he killed several Mexicans with a knife amid flying bullets. Settlers believed he was the ‘worst Indian who ever lived,’ but after his surrender to US troops in 1886, he converted to Christianity and even rode in Teddy Roosevelt’s inaugural parade.

How the West was won

The landscapes of America's three great mountain ranges - the Appalachians, the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada - challenged the westward push of the early pioneers. Their awe-inspiring geography, extreme weather, wild animals and ecology presented both great opportunities and great challenges for the native tribes, mountain men, fur traders, wagon trains and gold miners of the Wild West.

Albertan Apocalypse

I’m proud to recommend a great western adventure that came across my desk –Albertan Apocalypse, by John Keillor.

Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):

Zach McKinley returns home from years of war to find his province changing. Twelve years after the flash decimated the internet and government, rich people are getting richer in post-apocalyptic Alberta as their children behave badly. In fact, they're leading enemy forces straight to them. Combat operators are the backbone of provincial security, and they're being asked to choose between Calgary's mayor and the city's wealthiest families. Those who are loyal are in danger of being banished if the mayor is deposed.

The McKinleys would lose everything if the families with most money prevail. And now, the biggest threat to Alberta since the flash wants the resources that keep its people alive. Zach suffers from PTSD and emotional injuries that scar his past. But with his family and his life on the line, he must fight and win or lose his mind.
