Howdy pard,

Grab a blanket, pour yourself some coffin varnish and take this plate of beans. I’ve got more good news to share.

Long requested, finally here…Redding’s Fandango is finally in paperback! I’ve also collected a saddlebag of books to share with you by authors that I know you’ll enjoy. I’ve got a newspaper article here about that cowpoke Buck Taylor ‘King of the Cowboys’, as well as the Oklahoma Land Run. I’ve found a show about the Pleasant Valley War you’ll enjoy, as well as a recipe for homemade sourdough cinnamon rolls.

Dang, pass me that bottle of tanglefoot. As my ol’ grandpa used to say, ‘Tossin’ your rope before buildin’ a loop don’t ketch the calf’.

image‘Action-packed’

Thank you to everyone who has picked themselves up a copy of Redding’s Ace – the feedback has been wonderful.

Here’s just one review:

“This is a witty and fun cowboy tale that races along at a frantic pace and really feels like watching an old western movie or one of the TV shows of my youth. Think ‘Rawhide’ or ‘Bonanza’ or even ‘High Noon.’ There is also an element of ‘Blazing Saddles’ lurking in the background.”

Buck Taylor ‘King of the Cowboys’

John Wayne may have been ‘The Duke’, but the first ‘King of the Cowboys’ was a six-foot-four tall cowpuncher out of Texas who ended up performing before England’s Queen Victoria. William Levi ‘Buck’ Taylor was a real Texas cowboy. He roped and drove cattle, was a star of Buffalo Bill Cody’s show, and would eat 24 biscuits in one sitting. His grandfather was one of those killed at the Alamo and his father, a Texas Confederate cavalryman, died fighting in the Civil War.

Did you know?

The Oklahoma Land Run of 1893, also known as the 'Cherokee Outlet Opening', took place on September 16, 1893, marking the opening of the Cherokee Outlet for settlement. With a single shot from a pistol the mad dash began, and land-hungry pioneers on horseback and in carriages raced forward to stake their claims to the best acres. This event was the largest land run in U.S. history, with over 100,000 people racing to claim land in a 6,361,000-acre area previously owned by the Cherokee Nation. The run was characterized by chaos, fraud, and significant challenges, leading to widespread suffering and a number of deaths. Ironically, not many years before that same land had once been considered worthless desert.

Oklahoma Outcast

I’m proud to recommend a great Western saga that came across my desk – Oklahoma Outcast, by Linda Chism.

Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):

“Banished from home. Herded like cattle. Ensnared in frontier justice.

An impossible choice lies ahead. Walini can forsake her Cherokee heritage and evade captivity. Or she can travel across a frozen wilderness with a thousand exiles. Only a compelling plea for help convinces this Native American medicine woman to join her People on their hazardous journey.

But Walini’s efforts to save the most vulnerable are thwarted by cruel nature and desperate circumstances. Far too many of them die as they cross the horrific Trail of Tears. And when the broken survivors at last reach Indian Territory, their hearts ache for revenge. Is Walini’s medicine strong enough to heal their thirst for blood?”

Did you know?

The Wild West could be a lonely place, especially for men. In most towns, they outnumbered women 3-1, and in California, it was as much as 9-1. To help entertain the men, saloons would hire girls to dance, sing, and basically keep them drinking and playing cards. Although they were often lumped in with prostitutes, Saloon Girls were very different, generally considered to be good girls and were usually treated like ladies. In addition, the money they could make from one night’s commissions was often better than what men would make in a month, so very few had the need to turn to prostitution. Being a Saloon Girl did have its risks, and it was customary for the girls to carry a small pistol or dagger for protection.

Documentary: Forgotten Gunfighters: The Pleasant Valley War

This is the story of the Pleasant Valley War and Commodore Owens’ shootout in Holbrook, Arizona. It was a bloodier feud than that between the Hatfields and McCoys... more than 50 men were killed and yet it has been virtually erased from history.

The Pleasant Valley War is a fascinating story. For more, check out this great documentary. Enjoy - it’s a good one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hekALWtiWm0

Frontier Marshall

I’m proud to recommend a great Western saga that came across my desk – Frontier Marshall, by Michael Cardwell.

Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):

“U. S. Marshall Danny Coogan returns to his roots in Montana to settle into the sleepy town of Darwin with his pregnant wife. But as Danny races into town ahead of an early blizzard, the storms of his past threaten his future. Not only has the ambitions of the Ghost Buffalo Society set some of the local Indians on a path toward insurrection, but Danny’s best friend, Edmund Goodrunner, working undercover for the Tribal Council, has gone missing.”

Sweet range

Life on the range was tough, but that didn’t mean cowboys and settlers couldn’t enjoy some of the finer things in life… such as homemade sourdough cinnamon rolls. Imagine how good it would be to wake up after a night spent under the stars and be handed a piping hot sourdough cinnamon roll! And to boot, genuine cowboy chef Kent Rollins will show you how to cook it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVIMSQNhN3w
