The ‘Hanging Judge’

He called himself “The Only Law West of the Pecos”, had a reputation as a ‘hanging judge’ but knew nothing about the law, and held trials in the main bar of his own saloon. He survived a duel, his own hanging, and killed at least one man.

Yet ‘Judge’ Roy Bean, called ‘The Most Eccentric And Unqualified Judge In History’. wasn’t even a judge. It doesn’t get any more Wild West than that.

Did you know?

One of the most notorious criminals in the Wild West was James “Killer” Miller who was a paid assassin and gunslinger. He was known to have killed at least 14 people, but according to legend, the number could have been as high as 50. He was also called “Deacon Jim” because he didn’t’ smoke or drink, and frequently went to church. He was eventually caught and put in jail in Oklahoma, where he ended up being killed by a lynch mob who stormed the prison and hung him in a barn.

What were Wild West saloons really like?

Wild West saloons have been portrayed in popular culture as dens of vice and violence. Western saloons were part of the landscape, present in small camps and growing towns alike.

Saloons provided a means of survival, even offering a chance at wealth and prosperity on the frontier. Find out more about saloons in the Old West in this short documentary:

Chuckwagon Sourdough Pancakes

It's the most peaceful time of the day, preparing breakfast for cowboys who are getting ready to greet the sun. The chuckwagon was the heart of any trail drive camp and was never happier than when sourdough pancakes were on the menu. Cowboy chef Kent Rollis will show you how to cook sourdough pancakes worth their weight in gold.

Missouri Compromise

I’m proud to recommend a great western adventure that came across my desk – Missouri Compromise, by J D Parker.

Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):

It’s 1835, and Guy’s father was killed by Indians while trapping beaver on the Missouri. Only fourteen, Guy must join the same trapping party to help his mother support his little sisters. Although his uncle owns the trapping company, the superstitious voyageurs don’t welcome him. And Guy’s inexperience puts the whole party at risk. Will the trapping party all reach the summer rendezvous?
