Howdy pard,

Come on in, make yourself comfortable. It’s hot out there, and you look like you could use a tall glass of something cold.

First up I’d like to welcome back a number of you who haven’t been receiving this newsletter for a while – technical issues with that new-fangled internet-thingy meant that some of you missed out on my updates. I wasn’t aware, I apologize, and I hope you stick around – we’ve got lots to share!

Second, I’ve got something really special for you – a taste of my upcoming Sheriff Sol Redding western adventure. This newsletter is the only place you’ll find it – and I’m keen to see what you think. Drop me a line at [email protected]. The novel itself isn’t too far off now.

As ever, I’ve found a pile of free books and novels of every type for you to pick through and download – thrillers, mysteries, and all types of historical fiction. Help yourself – they are all free, take as much as you want. While you look I’ve got some great updates to share about the town of Deadwood in South Dakota – the town born outside the law. I’ve got an update on that weird foxfire I’ve heard folk talk about lighting up their longhorns, and I’ve can share a recipe a gent kindly taught me – John Wayne’s very own secret recipe for corn dodgers.

Anyway, finish up that drink – I’ve got a shot of whisky to follow it up. As my grandpa used to say, “kickin’ never gets you nowhere unless you’re a mule”.

A teaser - Sheriff Sol Redding’s next adventure

First up, I’ve got something special for you - an exclusive newsletter-only preview of a scene from my next Sheriff Sol Redding adventure. This is from the first draft of the book as it stands today – it may change a little (or a lot!) by the time I publish. I just wanted to give you a taste of what’s coming…

The scene: Sol and his partner Abe find themselves in a mess of trouble in the middle of a cattle stampede. If the marauding rustlers don’t get the heroes, then the charging longhorns just might…

Deadwood, South Dakota: Your money or your life

The city of Deadwood, South Dakota, grew from the promise of wealth. The discovery of gold in the southern Black Hills in 1874 set off one of the greatest gold rushes in American history.

Because the town was located illegally on Indian land, no government or law existed to keep trouble in check. Most of the town’s residents frequented the saloons and brothels that sprang up on nearly every street, occupying their time with drinking, gambling and fighting. Violence was common, lending credence to the oft-repeated observation that Deadwood hosted a murder a day.

Find out more about how Deadwood grew from these sordid beginnings to become the legendary western destination it is today:

Did you know?

St. Elmo’s Fire, or Foxfire, is a phosphorescent light which is often seen on the tips of cattle’s horns, and occasionally on a horse’s ears. It usually occurs on stormy nights or when there is electricity in the air. When the storm is fully charged, leaves, blades of grass, and the horns of cattle glow at their tips.
