Howdy pard,
Watch yourself now – we’ve got new cowboys in town and they’re lettin’ off some steam. There’s lead flyin’ around every which way! Let’s leave them to it and retire to the bar - we’ve got some catchin’ up to do.
I know you like your readin’, so I’ve found a pile of books for you to try. You’ll find something for everyone here – historical fiction, mysteries, and thrillers, even some tales that would make a sailor blush! I can tell you more about how important the cook was to a cattle drive, as well as an update about how many common folks are takin’ the law into their own hands via ‘vigilante justice’. Oh, and I’ve got a recipe for cast iron cornbread that will make your toes curl.
Where’s that bartender? I’m parched and I hold him accountable. As my grandpa used to say, 'there ain’t no horse that can’t be rode, there ain’t no man that can’t be throwed'.

Old West chuckwagons
Cattle drives were always led by a grizzled veteran cowboy or rancher who had forgotten more about longhorns than most ranch hands would ever know. However, many believe that the real (if unofficial) leader of any cattle drive was the cook.
Why? Life revolved around Cookie and his ‘chuckwagon’. One of the cook’s most important jobs was carried out in the early hours, before the cowhands climbed out of their bedrolls. Around 3am Cookie would grind roasted coffee beans to make a pot of joe—usually strong enough to “float a horseshoe.”
But woe be it for any cowhand who fell afoul of the cook....
Find out why in this article I wrote about cattle-drive cooks on my revamped website: https://nickbrumbywesterns.com/old-west-chuckwagons/

Law ‘n’ order vigilante-style
The Old West was not for the faint hearted. It took guts and grit to survive out on the Frontier. Justice was often achieved at the end of a gun. Some took the concept of "being tried by a jury of your peers" too literally—thieves at gold camps were put on trial and flogged, banished, or hanged by colleagues without involving law enforcement.
Polish up your firin’ iron – it’s time to learn more about some Old-West-style vigilante justice... I really enjoyed this video - tell me what you think! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7quDwVOG8k
Did you know?
Alice Ivers was born in England but moved with her family to the United States in 1865 and ended up in a girl’s boarding school. She tired of this, headed West and became notorious for her skills at the poker table. Whether Alice got her skills from her dad or from her gambler husband is unknown, but she became queen of the card table and earned the nickname “Poker Alice.” She was known for smoking cigars, wearing the most expensive dresses money could buy, and for being an expert at counting cards. Alice even had a catchphrase: “Praise the Lord and place your bets, and I’ll take your money with no regrets!” Rumor has it that Alice won about $250,000 in her lifetime.
Cast iron cornbread
Lordy do I love me some cornbread. Sometimes the simple foods are the best, and in my mind there’s nothing better than a plate of cornbread to go with bacon and beans, all cooked over an open campfire.
Legendary cowboy cook Ken Rollins kicks up the humble cornbread recipe in this video by adding chilis and bacon to create a meal that Wyatt Earp or Doc Holliday themselves would have been proud to eat.
Ken goes through every step in this great video – here's to good eating! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M8qfwhFv50
