Howdy pard,

Lordy lord, sit yourself down – you look all spent. Luckily, I’ve got just the thing to put a sparkle in your eye – a shot of my grandpa’s coffin varnish...

It’s great to see you again. I’ve got free books to share, and some novels that come with my special recommendation. I’ve the latest scuttlebutt about that rogue Al Swearengen from up Deadwood way, as well as an update on whisky names and slang from across the West. I’ve also got a picture-show about Shoshone Chief Washakie, and a recipe for homemade cowboy Big Mac hamburgers that will leave you wanting more. That’s a cast-iron promise!

Wait up now - your shot glass is empty. What sort of a host am I? Here, have another. If you don’t, as my ol’ grandpa used to say, you’d be ‘as crazy as popcorn on a hot stove’.

Al Swearengen and his Gem Theater

Pimp, pioneer, entrepreneur, Old West legend. Al Swearengen was all these and more.

One of the most ruthless, violent and outrageous characters ever to grace the American Frontier, Swearengen thrived in the lawless streets of Deadwood, South Dakota. For twenty-two years, Swearengen’s Gem Theater was one of the most popular entertainment venues (ahem, brothels) in Deadwood.

Today, all traces of his pride and joy, the Gem, have disappeared. However, despite (or perhaps due to) his shady dealings, violent temper and willingness to go to any lengths to prevail, Swearengen carved himself a place in the folklore of the West which has stood the test of time. ‘Non-stop cowboy action’

Thank you to everyone who picked up a copy of Redding’s Fandango – the reviews have been great:

“The story starts fast and runs hard. Six-shooters, Winchesters and Bowie knives are the tools of the trade and they get well used. If Sol didn't have bad luck, he would have no luck at all. This story brings the non-stop cowboy action all the way to the end.”

The book is also now available on major ebook retailers - or check out the extra special edition containing exclusive content and a story epilogue not available from other retailers, delivered by Bookfunnel, and readable on any device. You can find it here:

Did you know?

Whiskey was the social lubricant of choice in towns, saloons, mines and around campfires across the Old West. It’s no surprise that it was given more names than a dog had ticks. Old West slang terms for whiskey included: bottled courage, bug juice, coffin varnish, fire water, gut warmer, joy juice, neck oil, nose paint, tarantula juice, tonsil varnish, and tornado juice.

Frontier Outlaws

I’m proud to recommend a great western adventure that came across my desk – Frontier Outlaws – a Coogan Mystery, by Michael Cardwell.

Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):

Eight months after the showdown with the domestic terrorist group that nearly cost him his life, Danny Coogan, a Montana Fish and Game Officer, faces a new threat to his community—and his career. It starts with a dead steer. Which happens to be near the body of a dead rancher. Both of which are on the Dead Horse Indian Reservation.
Soon, Danny, the Tribal Police, the local Sheriff’s Department, and a US Marshal are pressed into action. Danny’s connections to the Rez draw him into the murder case and plant him firmly in the crosshairs of the killers.

Yesteryear’s Ruin

I’m proud to recommend a great psychological historical suspense that came across my desk – Yesteryear’s Ruin, by Jane M Bell.

Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):
