‘Action-packed’

Thank you to everyone who has picked themselves up a copy of Redding’s Ace – the feedback has been wonderful. Here’s just one review:

“This is a witty and fun cowboy tale that races along at a frantic pace and really feels like watching an old western movie or one of the TV shows of my youth. Think ‘Rawhide’ or ‘Bonanza’ or even ‘High Noon.’ There is also an element of ‘Blazing Saddles’ lurking in the background.”

Get your copy at major ebook retailers - or check out the extra-special edition containing exclusive content with discounts not available anywhere else, delivered by Bookfunnel, and readable on any ereader (including Amazon, iPad, Kobo, Nook), your tablet, phone, computer and/or the free Bookfunnel app.

Did you know?

Cottonwood Charlie Nebo was a cowboy for over 40 years. As he once wrote “Have had some exciting times in my career.” Nebo somewhat understated his accomplishments. Along with his Civil War participation and service in the Texas Rangers, Nebo had befriended young William Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid, who seemed to regard him as a father figure; lived many years among the Plains Indians; was injured at Pine Ridge, S.D., while serving with the Army during the Sioux outbreak, and associated with the likes of pioneer cattlemen John Chisum and Charles Goodnight. That's some life he led.

His Great Regret

I’m proud to recommend some great historical fantasy that came across my desk – His Great Regret, by Amy Crooks.

Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):

“In the wake of his beloved wife Alice’s death, Richard Woolsey’s world shatters. Left alone to raise six children in 1862, Indiana, he struggles to maintain his composure while grief threatens to overwhelm him. His only solace comes through letters written to Alice, pouring out his heart to a wife who can no longer answer.

When Richard meets Charlotte Nolan, a sharp-tongued Irish-American widow with four children of her own, he sees not love, but a practical solution. Charlotte’s commanding presence and fierce independence offer stability his family desperately needs. Their marriage, born of necessity rather than passion, holds the promise of a fresh start for both families.

From the fertile fields of Indiana to the bustling streets of Arkansas City, and through the rugged mining camps of the American West, Richard’s journey is one of ambition, regret, and the eternal hope of redemption.”

Did you know?

The whiskey that was sold in Old West saloons was a combination of burnt sugar, alcohol and chewing tobacco, and was extremely strong. ‘Cactus wine’ was also a popular drink and was made from a mix of tequila and peyote tea. Firewater, a common term for whiskey at the time, originated from early traders throwing whiskey on a fire to prove to the Indians that it had a high alcohol content.

Documentary: The Bozeman Trail

For many settlers the discovery of gold added urgency in their quest to head West. The lure of quick riches encouraged many to take risks and abandon caution in their bid to stake a claim. The Bozeman Trail was one such shortcut to the newly discovered gold fields of Montana Territory. Cutting through the heart of Native American lands, it provoked a clash of cultures that exploded into warfare, destruction and tragedy. It was a singular road that changed this part of the American west forever.

The Bozeman Trail has a fascinating story. For more, check out this great documentary. Enjoy - it’s a good one!:

Paris to the Prairie

Every cowboy loves a steak, but it’s a rare ranch-hand who knows how to cook a steak ‘sous vide’ style. Sous Vide is a French method of cooking meat to make it extra tender and juicy.

Typically, you need extra equipment in the kitchen, but in this clip cowboy cooking legend Kent Rollins will show you how to do it outdoors with a cooler and torch. Let Kent show you how to bring a little taste of Paris to the Prairie in this excellent video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_mbTieM7Bc
