Howdy pard,
It’s good to see you again – I’ve been waitin’ for you. I’ve built up the fire and I’ve got a shot of my ol’ grandpa’s moonshine here with your name on it.
I sure hope you enjoyed Christmas – but with a new year comes new opportunities and new chances to enjoy the finer things. My saddle bag is bulging with books – free novels, free stories, free tales that will help you drive away those winter blues. I have the latest about that newfangled Transcontinental Railway they’ve been talkin' about, and a great update on the history and culture of the great Native American nations, including the Navajo, Cheyenne, and Lakota Sioux. I’ve got the lowdown on that Reno Train Gang and its doin’s, and I’ve also got a recipe for cowboy trashcan turkey that will make you wish it was Thanksgiving again!
Just listen to me, and you with an empty glass. Here, have another. As my ol’ grandpa used to say, “Life is simpler when you plow around the stump”.

The Transcontinental Railroad
Seven years, 1,911-miles of track, and countless millions of railway sleepers, rail ties, tracks and rail spikes - it was the ‘Space Program’ of the American Old West. The Transcontinental Railroad was the project that connected the east and west coasts of the United States of America and made it possible for USA to become the greatest country in the world.
The Transcontinental Railroad was (and is) one of the greatest achievements in American history. However, the irony about the Railroad was that it didn’t actually reach either the East or West coasts. Find out more about why this didn’t make a difference to the success of this monumental undertaking.

Did you know?
The very first train robbery (on a moving train) was carried out in October 1866 by the Reno Gang. During this legendary heist, the Gang boarded the train and forced the messenger (who had the safe keys) to open one of the safes. They found $18,000 in cash and jewelry, which they happily stole. However, a bigger safe didn't have a key, so the Gang kicked it off the train, planning to open it at their leisure once they had escaped. It was too heavy to take with them, so the Gang was forced to abandon it where it lay. Two years later, six members of the Reno Gang were lynched and hanged from a tree. That site is now called Hangman Crossing, and they were buried in Seymour, Indiana. Their graves can still be visited, but they're behind a small gate.
