Howdy pard,

I've always got time for a friend -- settle yourself there and grab a glass of something cold. Never mind what might be happening elsewhere in town, you’ll always get a warm welcome here!

Guess what – I’ve got two fantastic book collections for you to pick through. Choose and download as much as you want – they’re all free. I’ve also got some genuine scuttlebutt about ‘Boot Hill’, or as I like to call it, the ‘dead center of town’. I’ve got an update on the Army’s campaign to wipe out American Buffalo across the West. Oh, cover your ears – I’ve got a list of insults used by cowboys fresh off the range from Dodge City to Dallas. Not to mention, a great recipe for Coffee Steak and Cowboy Cabbage. Delicious!

Anyway, let me top up that drink for you. As my ol’ grandpa used to say, “love your enemies but keep your six-shooter well oiled”.

One more thing…

I hope that you enjoy this newsletter – in fact I hope you enjoy it just as much as I love writing it!

However, I’ve got a piece of advice for you if you want to ensure you keep receiving this newsletter. It’s simple – just click on one (any) of the links down below.

By doing that you tell the powers-that-be that you like this newsletter and want to stay on the sender list. If you don’t click on something every month or two, there’s a big chance the powers-that-be will get the notion you aren’t interested in it and will stop sending it to you all together. Heck, if you don’t want to click on an article, click on this link and tell me what you'd like me to write about next month!: [email protected]

I apologize for being so up front about it all, but I don’t want to lose you. This is an annoying technical glitch which is out of my hands… and I’ve got exciting things coming soon and I want you to be the first to know.

Time to read something good

When I was a boy my ol’ grandpa once told me 'there’s nothin’ new under the sun'. It’s rare that I disagreed with him, because he lived to the age of one hundred and dickety-two and wasn’t afraid of anything. However, this one time I did tell him he was wrong – there’s always a new story to read.

He wasn’t happy about it, but I was right. And I’ve got some new stories for you today. This new collection of eighty free historical fiction novels are some fresh takes on some familiar events and historical eras, including the Old West, Victorian England, and pre-World War 2 Europe.

These books are waiting for you right now and they won’t cost you a cent. Pick one, pick ten, pick them all – it’s up to you. But don’t wait – they are only available for a limited time!

Here’s a couple of titles to whet your interest:

  • Gentleman Pirate by Isabella Winter
  • Burning the Witches, by Penn Fawn
  • The Road to Silver Springs, by the Paper Lantern Writers
  • The Forbidden Lassie, by Iona McDuff

Boot Hill – the dead center of town

Shoot-outs, showdowns, ambushes, gunfights, walkdowns, and face offs all helped put the ‘Wild’ in ‘Wild West’. These incidents could all send a man to an early grave and would keep the undertaker busy. Cemeteries across the American West earned the nickname ‘Boot Hill’ for this very reason – and Boot Hill could be the busiest place in town. But why did ‘Boot Hill’ become the name of choice?

Did you know?

Between 10 to 30 million American Buffalo roamed the West in the early 1800s. By the early 1900s, this number had dropped to less than 1,000 animals. The American buffalo were ruthlessly slaughtered, mostly shot by people commissioned by United States Army or the Army itself. The American buffalo was a primary source of food and hide for Native Americans, and the United States wanted to wipe them out. "Buffalo" Bill Cody himself is attributed with killing 4000 bison in two years. In 1889, they reached their lowest level with only 256 buffalo in captivity. Today, the bison population has increased to 150,000-200,000

Ten-dollar Stetson on a five-cent head

Cowboys are nothing but honest, and when it comes to insults, they are not afraid to speak their mind when it’s required. This is a tradition that hearkens back to Old West days, and our language is richer for it. Some of the all-time classic insults come from the Wild West, such as ‘carpetbagger’, ‘If he got any dumber, we'd have to water him twice a week’, and of course ‘He’s wearin’ a ten-dollar Stetson on a five-cent head’.
