In the Flow

I have a new obsession.

A couple of days a week I get in the car at about 6AM and drive to a forested mountain ridge where I typically hike for 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the trail I take.

It's just me and the forest creatures.

When I started I would listen to podcasts, missing half of the magic of being in the forest.

Now I can hear the startled deer when they notice my approach and the chipmunks complaining.

I can't believe how good 2 hours with just the noise of the woods feels.

We so rarely give ourselves a break from input.

Tim Philpott creates a casual cooking brand for men but accidentally gets loved by professional chefs.

Tim Philpott is creating a casual cooking brand for men who like to host dinner parties for their friends. His first product, a chef's knife, has attracted the attention of professional chefs, and Tim isn't sure if he's done something wrong. We discuss how he can leverage these endorsements to get his brand in front of his target market, and what his next steps could be.

On the bookshelf

Not a book this week but rather a set of letters a man wrote his son from jail. Gary Halpert, AKA the Prince of Print, wrote copy for mail order ads. The Boron Letters are his attempt to distill everything he knew and thought important for his son Bond. There's 25 of them and you can read them here.

In the Toolbox

I unsubscribed from my newspaper this week, being told every day how shitty the world is wasn't doing me any good. I got a bunch of emails including from the editor inviting me to give them my phone number so they could call me at a time that suited me so I could tell them why I had left. I deleted the emails.

I also unsubscribed from a monthly, paid, newsletter on copy writing this week. I hadn't read the last couple of months I received and got all I was going to get out of it, so it was time to move on.When you first sign up you're told that if you ever cancel your subscription, you will never be allowed to resubscribe, for any reason, ever again. I got a short email informing me that my automatic billing had been stopped and that I could never, ever come back for any reason. I thought that was a really smart way to create scarcity. I deleted that email too.

All the best!
