5 Curious Facts About the Day of The Virgin of Guadalupe 🧐

Last Sunday 12th of December, was a VERY important day for faithful Mexican citizens. On this day we honor and celebrate our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico's Patron Saint.
Maybe you've heard about this national holiday… but we bet you didn't know some of these interesting facts:
1) The original Guadalupe is NOT from Mexico 😯
Many aren't aware that the original Virgen de Guadalupe is from Extremadura, Spain. The legend goes as follows: During a storm at sea, Christopher Columbus prayed to Guadalupe, Patron of Extremadura, and she allegedly saved his fleet so he became a devotee and even named the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe in her honor.
2) Worshippers from all over the country (and the world) 🗺
Many from all over the country make the pilgrimage to the Basílica de Guadalupe in Mexico City to lay their eyes on La Patrona de México. The night before the Feast Day, the faithful community gathers for a vigil.
3) Guadalupe is the most common name in Mexico 🇲🇽
There is no doubt that the Virgin of Guadalupe is part of the Mexican identity. Millions of women and men in our country are named Guadalupe, with many going by the nickname "Lupe”.
