Exotic Mexican Dishes That You'll Want To Try 😋 (Or Not 🙊)

Not everything is tacos and burritos; Mexico is well-known for having the best street food and we want you to have some new experiences. Some of the most common dishes are a bit extravagant for the foreign audience but... don't worry, because every single one of them has its charm and there are options for everyone. After all: what’s the point of living if not to experience new things?

You will want to try them all out... even if it's just to satisfy your curiosity! 😁

1) Chapulines

Ever thought of eating insects? Now it’s time to try some! Chapulines (grasshoppers or crickets) are typically fried in garlic, chili and lime and you can often find them in stores as a healthy snack. Pay attention because they are frequently offered on 5th avenue in Playa del Carmen and on almost every public beach.

Originally, this snack is from Oaxaca but you can find it all across the country now. This crunchy treat might sound a bit odd but its taste will surprise you. Give it a chance! 🦗

2) Nopales

How about eating a cactus?🌵 The nopal is a cactus and people in Mexico usually consume its pulp and fruit. This food really has many health properties like antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and is used across the country in many dishes and served in various different ways. This cactus is a multifaceted ingredient by excellence, bringing an exotic touch to many Mexican dishes.

3) Huitlacoche

Pronounced weet·luh·kow·chay 😂 (you’ll get used to it), this food is also known as “corn smut”. Don’t be fooled by the name, this ingredient is considered a delicacy and is often used in soups and quesadillas. Huitlacoche is produced when fungus grows on corn plants and that’s why it tastes pretty similar to a mushroom. Anyways, you should try it yourself!

4) Mole

Mole is a very traditional sauce composed of many different ingredients. Perhaps the most famous version is the one that includes chocolate (its flavor is sooo eccentric and yet so good 🤤) but that’s not always a mandatory ingredient. It is served alongside vegetables, chicken or pork. There are over 50 different recipes of Mole and each family has its own secret to prepare it; that’s why Mole is so special, every single one of them tastes differently.

5) Tongue, Brain and Beef Cheek Tacos

Lengua (tongue), sesos (brain) and cachete (beef cheek) are some of the most common tacos (besides from pastor) that you can find in street food carts. You can have tacos almost from every meat cut you can imagine (sensitivity warning for veggies and vegans 😅)... eye, lips, head and other types of tacos are available as well. They’re usually made of cow or pork meat. These underrated parts are considered very yummy for many tourists!

6) Fresh Fruits with Chili, Lime or Chamoy

This healthy snack is usually offered on beaches because it’s really refreshing as well. The bittersweet shock might be strong at first, but after you process the feeling, it becomes addictive. This treat is usually made with seasonal fruits such as pineapple, mango, watermelon and jicama. We can’t say no to a refreshing and healthy snack, right? 🍉
