A jewel with a past 💎

The municipality of Solidaridad (where Playa is located), was founded in 1993 (next year we'll be 30!); but Playa del Carmen was officially born in 1902, and its true origin dates back to pre-Hispanic times.

The area, originally settled by the ancient Mayan civilization, was known as Xaman Há "water from the north". In 1526 the city was colonized by Francisco Montejo and received its current name “Playa del Carmen” in honor of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, Patron Saint of the Sea.

A fisher’s town 🎣

The modern history of the city is said to have begun with the arrival of the first families from the Yucatan Peninsula, due to the Caste War (1847-1901), who where looking for some relief in a less conflictive region 🥺

Its first residents became fishermen, coconut sellers and “chicleros” (gum extractors) aiming at leaving their wandering lifestyle and settling in these new lands.

As the number of residents increased, Playa del Carmen became more popular among tourists, due to its quiet beaches, the diversity of cultures and the locals' friendliness. With time this beautiful coastal city has become one of the most sought-after tourist destinations of the world.
