To adapt, or to not adapt?

image

Hi ,

Where do you stand on adaptations?

Adapting a literary world is incredibly difficult. Despite the advances in movie-making and visual spectacle, we find ourselves drowning in films and TV that are very style over substance. Missing characters or plotlines, or added characters and plotlines. Soon, our most beloved imaginary worlds lie butchered around us. A shell. Man. Depressing to even think about!

So, let's look at the bright side. The Lord of the Rings is considered to be the greatest adaptation of any literary work so far. And in this golden age of streaming, we can hope to see more of our favourite fictional fantasies come to life on the silver screen.

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time has finished its first season. What do you think? Worthwhile attempt, or stumbles under its own weight? Or never read it?

It got me wondering in a rare moment of solace, what world I'd like to see shining on my TV screen? I think on the sci-fi hand, Metro 2033 would be interesting. And fantasy, I could play it safe and say anything by Brandon Sanderson. But, I'm going to have to vote in a favourite and say The Dark Tower. (I know that last one almost made it to TV, but almost isn't did).

What would your vote be?

While you spin your wheels and wait to see what will become of your favourites, I've come armed with a suitable distraction.

Below, I've included links to a couple of month-long promotions where you can scope out some free fantasy, sci-fi, and just about everything else in the middle. Check it out -

Looks...Weird?

That's about it from me for this time. I'll be back again soon with more books for you to get your mitts into. In the meantime, enjoy watching your latest adaptation, or reply to this email with what you think would make a great addition to TV?

Have a great read!
