Hi ,
I get really jealous. I mean, fierce!
You ever see those films where there's a failing student and while the rest of the world looks down on them, scolds them for failing, there's an ever empathetic teacher who sees an opportunity to help? And this teacher, wow! They know cool jokes, can explain complex topics in a way that makes you wonder if they wrote all the "Dummies Guide" books and never get upset when called upon. (shout out to TV's Scott Clarke; bonus points if you know where he's from.)
Those films make me jealous because I don't remember any of my school teachers being like that.

Which brings us along to the subject of today's email which is going to be more akin to a review. Strange, don't think I've ever done that before. Rant? Yes. Crtitcisms? Yes. Honest reviews of another's work...
I wanted to take a minute to extol the virtues of Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary. (Minor Spoilers) Andy Weir is of course the author of The Martian which apart from its one major scientific liberty, is a grounded approach to survival on another planet. His latest escapade through the stars puts us in the shoes of a school teacher aboard a starship trying to solve a world-ending catastrophe. Imagine the movie Armageddon if it was competently written.
Because he wakes up with TPA (Typical Protagonist Amnesia), he has to go about reorientating himself aboard his starship and uses what he calls 'back of the napkin math' to solve a lot of his problems. What comes through the strongest in the narrative is Weir's love of science and the unknown. The big 'what if's'?
And I find his explanations of scientific principles, put across in the most entertaining manner, much easier to understand and retain. I feel like a right brainiac! The unsettling thing is I can't decide if that speaks to Andy Weir's skills as a writer or my empty headedness?

I highly recommend the Project Hail Mary. It's an entertaining story that takes only a few scientific liberties (because I know science now), and you should read it when you get the chance.
What do you think? Fair enough review? If you'd like to have me review things some more just reply to this email, I even take recommendations. Until next time I've got some titles here for you to check out. These are a little out of the box, I was hoping you'd stretch your mind as I've stretched mine!
Until next time, have a great read!
