Happy International Women’s Day! Today is a great day to reflect on the inspirational characters of literature.

Fantasy offers a unique space where women are often portrayed with agency and independence, unconstrained by the limitations of our real-world societies. From wielding magic in battle to mastering the art of combat, these heroines inspire readers with their strength and resilience. Not to be overlooked are those heroines who use their intelligence to great effect, or manage the burdens of leadership and duty with admirable grace.

Some of my favourite heroines include Sally Lockhart, Lyra Belacqua, Lirael, and Arya Stark. Each of these characters has left a lasting impression on me with their courage and determination. Who are your favourites?

In my own writing, I've recently been exploring the character of Torvia, a capable and independent mage loyal to her found family. As I delved deeper into her backstory, I found her journey to be both fascinating and rewarding. I look forward to sharing more of her adventures in the stories to come.

Meanwhile, the cast of 'The Discovery of Magic' comprises a range of different personalities and abilities, from adventurous and bold young women, to proud princesses. The fun is as much in their differences as their abilities. More on that book to come.
