Did you know I used to only write fantasy?

It feels like another lifetime ago, but once upon a time I wrote a 100,000 word fantasy novel (that will never see the light of day) followed by a fantasy trilogy. From that point I dabbled in contemporary romance and historical fiction, even young adult and non-fiction writing. But it has been a long time since I’ve returned to my fantastical roots. Well, in honour of my 37th birthday this week and remembering a slightly younger me, I thought I might make this newsletter a little fun with some enchanted elements.

Aussie "fact": the Bunyip

Over the years, the tale of the bunyip has taken many forms. From mythological beast to monstrous amphibian, the bunyip was said to lurk in billabongs and swamps. Some sources believe the potential sightings could have in fact been the diprotodon, a giant wombat that is now extinct. Funny enough, the Bunyip is also the title of the historic newspaper of my hometown and the old office building established in 1863 is still there.

Speaking of my hometown, I have a Cinderella retelling releasing soon that is set here! This story is part of the historical fairytale collection by Beyond the Bookery, titled “A Worthy Love”.

What’s Blooming?

Irises. Evidently, these bulbous beauties symbolise faith and love, but they also have a special significance in my Cinderella story...

"...the house itself encapsulates our family, down to the unique detail of the purple irises in the stained glass of the front door and the windows—Mother’s favorite flower. No one would have known except for Father and me. The year she died, I was barely eight years old, but I remember Father taking me to the garden to plant the iris bulbs. He told me that despite the winters of life, those who hoped in the Lord would renew their strength and bloom once again."

From the Writer:

Confession time - it has been over six months since I've written a newsletter. In truth, I had big publishing plans for this year but God had other plans. Shortly after I sent my last newsletter at the end of 2024, the opportunity arose for me to work part time at a Christian college. I started in the January of this year and it has taken me until now to not only settle into the role but also to get back into the rhythm of writing. A rhythm that is a lot slower but for which I'm grateful. Because, instead of writing to produce, I'm returning to the joy of the craft and to the blessing of writing as worship.

Before I go...

Here's a colouring-in picture inspired by my Cinderella retelling.

Until next time.

Blessings,

Liz

Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the Lord is upon many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The voice of the Lord breaketh the cedars; yea, the Lord breaketh the cedars of Lebanon.
He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.
The voice of the Lord divideth the flames of fire.
Psalm 29:2-7 (KJV)
