A Birthday Black Duck

I went to the fabulous pub The Black Duck for my birthday recently. It's one of my favorite places and subsequently I was very sad to hear this week that it has had to close due to Covid 19. It was very popular and always busy, one of those places where you have to book. I shall miss it hugely

Too Many Apples?

I talk about our little apple trees in the insomnia post and how we are about to be overwhelmed with apples. I've joined a canning and preserving facebook group and that has inspired me to have another go at preserving apples. I have dried some and husband and I were munching on some last night whilst watching Harlots. What a series that has been! Looking on Amazon to show you a link, I was surprised to see that there are 2 more series available on Prime. I have Prime, so I shall be viewing those shortly! Plus there is also a book that was the inspiration for the series, and I have pre-ordered the paper back of that

Anyway, back to the apples. What I am planning to do is to use the kinds of jars that a household accumulate, jam jars, pickle jars, gherkin jars, that sort of thing, any jar with a screw top lid. Then peel and core the apples, pack them tightly into sterilised jars, pour in boiling syrup, or possibly just water as I don't really want the sugar, and water bath them in the oven. I'll show you what I did when I've done some. It should work alright

I still won't be able to use all our apples by preserving and drying, there is no point in me preserving more jars than we will realistically use until next apple season. So I shall still give away a lot of them.
