Monthly u3a cookery group
The u3a cookery group are coming round this week. This time we'll be making Lemon Peel Jam. I had some carcasses, so I thought we could use them for that. I love being able to make something lovely from something that would have been thrown away!
Then Sweet Corn Soup. Super easy, a bung it all in the pot type affair.
As Easter is fast approaching, I've sorted out an Easter biscuit recipe which we'll be trying.
Then we'll finish up with a 2 ingredient chocolate cake I found on the internet. It's only got apples and chocolate in it! It tastes ;lovely straight away after you've made it, with a mouse like texture. But if you leave to to set properly in the fridge overnight, it really is much more cake like.

Eye Liner
I'm feeling a bit sticky around the eyes right now, as this morning, I had permanent eye-liner tattooed on. It's very dark at the moment, but I'm assured it will fade over the next couple of weeks.
After 6 weeks, I have to have a top-up, then that's it. I'm not allowed to get water on them for the next week. It will be very strange not splashing my face with cold water first thing in the morning, and avoiding that area in the shower will be a bit tricky.
I have had false lashes on since our wedding in 2015. They last 6 weeks, and I'm not allowed those for three months! Eek! I'll really miss those!
I love the false lashes and since leaving working in an office, I don't wear much make-up. Just a bit of lipstick and I'm good to go. And even the lipstick is one of those that lasts all day.
I'm so high maintenance you know!
Recipes this time include a versatile lime syrup, two Sunday roast options and a pudding for afterwards, assuming you have room!
Lime Syrup
We are very fortunate in that a local church has started a community larder. Each morning, they pick up surplus groceries that would have gone to landfill from the Co-Op and lay it all out on
There were a few limes there this morning, so I took 3 and made some lime syrup with them. The limes wouldn’t have lasted much longer, they were beginning to dis-colour and had small brown patches on them.
Stretch A Chicken and make it last a week
Buying a whole chicken and jointing it yourself is cheaper than buying ready jointed chicken pieces. If you are going to roast a chicken, then a whole one is much nicer to present at the table I think than pieces.
The price per kg of a whole chicken is much cheaper than a pack of breasts (the most expensive), thighs or wings. You may of course specifically want, say, wings, for a recipe you are making. A whole medium chicken at the time of writing costs £3.19 in Aldi
A medium chicken, on average, will yield coming up to a kilo of cooked meat.
Nut Roast with Bubble and Squeak
Walnuts, peanuts and kidney beans combine in this vegan Sunday roast, served with bubble & squeak – yum!

Chocolate Nut Cheesecake
Digestives, peanuts, chocolate and soft cheese - ooh yum!

I published an ebook for meal plan 1 in August 2021 and am delighted that many people have thought it was worth getting. I repriced it again in June 2022 and it was still holding on, even in these scary times. Now we are in September and prices have shifted again and I've managed to get my head around WooCommerce so I can feature it on the blog and you can find it here.
I was busy recooking, photographing and updating the recipes for Meal Plan 2 and putting them into an ebook as well. The meal plan was first written in 2013 and still prices up, which is fabulous and that is finally complete. The book is done now too, prices seem to be stable enough to do it.
I've finally completed the e-book from the Stretch A Chicken To Last A Week series. Took me absolutely ages to finish it off!
Do come and say hello on the Fantastically Frugal Food Facebook group, or the Sensational Slimming Sustenance group. I'd love to see you. Lots of useful tips, recipes and ideas. The over 17,000 membership are brilliant, brimming with talent.
And don't forget Thrifty Lesley, where there are 800+ recipes of fantastically frugal food and many weekly meal plans. And Cheap Family Recipes where you can find all kinds of delicious things that don't cost much, with two family monthly meal plans.
I've also got a few YouTube videos up, not many yet, but I'm planning to do more. I've done a couple more, need to edit them now. So much to do, so little time!
With all best wishes, until next time
