Fasting

As I write this, I have just had lunch on Saturday 13th. Nothing unusual in that you might think. But it's the first food I've had since dinner on Wednesday.

I've decided to give fasting another go and started on Thursday. It was relatively easy in this hot weather. Got up on Friday. Not particularly hungry so thought I'd wait until lunchtime, and then just carried on like that and didn't eat all day Friday either. Gallons of water mind!

Saturday dawned and I was still alright. Come lunchtime, was feeling the need for food, so had a small piece of quiche, a giant tomato from the garden, and some strawberries.

Looking forward to dinner this evening!

I intend to do another 2 or 3 day fast from 11th September - got to work it round everything I do!

It's good for my health, but I'm doing it for weight loss. It will be interesting to see how much I've lost this time round after a few days refeeding.

I first read about fasting in a book by Dr Jason Fung - The Obesity Code. It's got a lot of science behind it. I certainly felt well throughout. If I can find my copy on my shelves, I'll have another read of it.

Food Pantry

I took a bag of spare carrier bags to the food pantry on Wednesday. As I was dropping them off, I noticed that there was nothing left. But that wasn't unexpected, it was 1 o'clock.

But no! As I put the bags on the shelves, I noticed a bag of something tucked in the corner, out of sight. It was 8 cooking apples, the same size as eating apples. There was a small bruise or two, but other than that, nothing wrong with them!

I made my husband an apple crumble yesterday. He's got the other half of that today. And I've just prepared another couple of apples to put with a small bowl of blackberries. He doesn't like blackberries, I do. So this little compote will be mine today and tomorrow.

Fragments of Glass

On Tuesday, I went to a glass workshop with both of my daughters. It's run by Barbara Hobbart at her home workshop. She makes and teaches glass mosaic or cut glass panels, jewellery and pendants. This is what we made - aren't they great!

We had great fun and will probably go again. Barbara is doing Christmas ornaments later in the year - that sounds tempting!

She also does things around 20 word stories - what an interesting concept! So something like -

He emerged from the forest exhausted, dehydrated, looking forward to a swim in the ocean and hoping tomorrow would be better.

Or

She regretted many things from her youth. Old age is crap, but acquired wisdom is great to pass on.

What would you write?

What I've been making in previous Augusts

Lemon Jam made with lemons that have already been zested and juiced

image

This preserve is made primarily using lemon carcasses that have already been used for something else. They’ve been zested and juiced and would ordinarily just be thrown away. If you don’t have any of those, it will work just as well using whole lemons, or a mix of the two.

I used some lemon carcasses that had been used in cooking, a couple of pieces that had been used to flavour jugs of water, and a single half of a whole lemon. I’d used the other half, and this half had got a bit dried up.

Red Onion Chutney / Marmalade

Really this is a recipe about stirring. Other than chopping an inordinate amount of onions, that’s pretty much all you have to do

Panzanella with lovely summer ripe tomatoes

Most recipes say that you need to let the bread soften in the tomato juices, but I don’t like that and eat mine while the croutons are still crunchy, it’s delicious!

An e-book or two

I published an ebook for meal plan 1 in August 2021 and am delighted that many people have thought it was worth getting. I've repriced it again in June 2022 and it's still holding on, even in these scary times.

I've managed to get my head around WooCommerce so I can feature it on the blog and you can find it here.

I was busy recooking, photographing and updating the recipes for Meal Plan 2 and putting them into an ebook as well. The meal plan was first written in 2013 and still prices up, which is fabulous and that is finally complete.
