Waldron Classic Car Show

image

Each year for a few years now, a local village, Waldron, hosts a Classic Car Show. More than 300 classic cars of all types gather, there are stalls of local producers, entertainment by local groups and choirs and it's all great fun.

The choir I'm in did a set. We were in a little band stand and the first song has a long intro, so we do a bit of synchronised moving. Two bars in there was a huge crack and half the stage buckled - eek!

We hastily evacuated the stage and resettled on the grass, then started our set once again.

It was a typical day of this summer, but fortunately, there lots of dry spells between the drizzle. I had a couple of impromptu conversations whist huddled beneath a gazebo which was interesting.

Eastbourne Airbourne

Last weekend, we went to the Eastbourne Airbourne. A free annual event taking place over 4 days.

We both particularly love the Typhoon. It roars around the sky in impossible contortions and really gets the blood racing!

Sometimes it streaks by in complete silence, followed a few seconds later by the sound of the ROAR of the engine trying to catch up - wonderful stuff!

It is only going at a maximum of half speed at any one time, as if it was flat out - we wouldn't see it at all!

We were there watching this actual display.

And if you turn the volume right up, this one gives a better feel for the glorious throaty roar. Love it!

I put the YouTube clip in, but when I saved the email, the clip was removed - goodness knows why!

Blight on the tomatoes

I grow 3 different kinds of tomatoes each year. A cherry sized one, Tigerella, which is striped and has exceptional flavour, and a huge one, Brandywine, also with exceptional flavour.

I have been enjoying picking then for a few weeks now, and was sad to see that the Brandywine has got blight.

I picked the unblighted ones off, and any that I could chop the blighted bits off of, and have put them in a basket to ripen in the kitchen. Such a shame.

Tomato risotto for dinner tonight to use some of the many baskets of tomatoes dotted around the kitchen.

Flowers out of season

Hellebores are a welcome flower in the depths of winter, usually flowering some time between late November and January.

I have a happy and healthy looking hellebore in the garden flowering its socks off, in August! I think it might be a bit confused!

Not looking its best today as it is laden with rain from a recent shower.

New recipes

image

Last time, I mentioned some new recipes I've been working on. I've finished the Sicilian Spaghetti one and was very happy with it.

It has chicken, olives, raisins, almonds, sun dried tomatoes and lemon zest and juice. Very tasty! Leftovers are great the next day for a packed lunch too.

I tried using tagliatelle the first time I made it, but the dressing isn't the right kind for that. It ended up as pile of tagliatelle with all the tasty bits underneath.

It is part of the poached chicken series that I am working on, where I take a medium chicken, poach it and make it last a family a week.

As it is part of that series, I added the chicken, but to be honest, I would be perfectly happy with a bowl of this without the chicken!

What I've been making in previous Augusts

Red Onion Chutney Marmalade

image

This delicious condiment can be made with either red or white onions. I used red as that is what I had at the time.

It can be used in so many ways, a jar doesn't last long!

Cheesey Jacket Potatoes

Barely a recipe at all, my children loved these when they were growing up - and they still do!

Punjabi Cabbage

This is a Northern Indian cabbage recipe, packed full of vegetables, pulses and spices. Make it hot if you like things that way. Personally, I like a lot of spice and hardly any heat

Panzanella with lovely sun ripened tomatoes

image

Tomatoes are at their peak right now in the UK. This is lovely thing to make with tomatoes ripened in the sun.

I like the croutons crispy, so add them at the last minute.

I published an ebook for meal plan 1 in August 2021 and am delighted that many people have thought it was worth getting. I repriced it again in June 2022 and it was still holding on, even in these scary times. Now we are in September and prices have shifted again and I've managed to get my head around WooCommerce so I can feature it on the blog and you can find it here.

I was busy recooking, photographing and updating the recipes for Meal Plan 2 and putting them into an ebook as well. The meal plan was first written in 2013 and still prices up, which is fabulous and that is finally complete. The book is done now too, prices seem to be stable enough to do it.

I've finally completed the e-book from the Stretch A Chicken To Last A Week series. Took me absolutely ages to finish it off!
