You've heard about love at first sight...

...but is there such a thing as hate at first sight? Kiya and Ryder are in for some interesting banter.

NaNo Winner

To no one's surprise, I ended up winning NaNo on day 9. The chapter I was working on put me 600 words over the finish line. The book is still in progress, so check out the little snippet below and keep reading over on Wattpad.

"Laura takes on NaNoWriMo" isn't even a challenge. Hit that 50K and just kept going. I did have a few rough days with a migraine that set me back. I guess next year I'll have to shoot for a 7 day win.

Book Releases

The Fall of a King is now out! I'm really excited. Don't forget that book 1 is still $0.99 so jump on that. There's a deal below that can get you the first four books in this series for just $0.99.

I've also set up the preorders for books 5 and 6 in the series (release dates in December), which you can find on the series page. Avoid the blurbs and click that preorder if you want to be surprised by the events!

New Chapters:

Soul Collapsed - You can read new chapters of Soul Collapsed now available on Wattpad! These are 100% free rough draft looks - a great example of things you can read ALL THE TIME if you join me on Patreon!

Here's a look at the action from Ryder's early chapter. You've heard of love at first sight? Yeah, Kiya and Ryder are hate at first sight.

Josh stepped forward. “I think Declan and I are technically considered the veterans so we can guard each other.”

I guess his name was Declan. He shrugged. “Look, I’m not sure any of us are really adamant about taking this seriously. Why don’t we just make it look like we’re trying?”

“Nonsense,” Kiya interrupted. “I’d like to play a realistic game.”

The kid on our team chimed in. “Well, you should go easy on Ryder since he has an injury.”

Kiya flashed Declan a glance before looking at me. “Does he? Sounds convenient considering he was just told he has to play against a girl. Worried I’ll show you up?”

“Hey, Josh,” Declan blurted. “Let’s get Coach to flip a coin for who gets the ball first, yeah?” He placed his hand on his teammate’s head and spun him away. “Come on, you little twerp.”

“Great idea,” Josh said. He nudged our teammate away as Kiya stayed planted in her stance, blue eyes locked on me.

“So, I’m Ryder,” I said, uncomfortable with her glare.

“Obviously,” she replied, unflinching.

I let out a breath and shook my head. “Okay, did I do something?”

“Nothing I can think of,” Kiya said. “So, what did you hurt? Your pride?”

I tightened my fist at my side. “Seriously, what is your problem?”

“Just trying to figure out why you’re afraid to play against me,” she said, stepping closer to me. “Is it because I bite?”

“I’m not afraid to play against you.”

“Prove it, football star.”

Character Feature - Kiya:

I'm slowly becoming more obsessed with Kiya. She was fun to write from the start, especially because she doesn't have powers. That makes her a little bitter, mostly since she is still forced to be in that community and can't find her place (recall, she's the daughter of Finnley and Nate (for those of you reading the Soul Series)). It also doesn't help that when she went to get her powers, it backfired... massively. So without powers and some past trauma, including actual paralysis, she's become a hardened shell and that's the big asshole personality she shows.

I think it's quite intriguing to test her boundaries a little bit and see what soft pieces I can poke inside her and gauge how she reacts. On multiple occasions, we've seen her try to manage her past relationship with Isobel and deal with the raw emotion that is still there. She is still very much in love with Iz, and that's a hard pill to swallow since they didn't break up because they stopped loving each other. On top of that, Kiya has a budding thing with Ryder that can't fully be explained. It's definitely a piece of the puzzle that will develop throughout this first draft. I've already found the characters pulling me away from my original plans for this book. I've handed them the reigns and will see where it goes!

What sort of podcasts do you like to listen to? I'm debating starting one around this newsletter and my fiction writing. Ideally this would be a solo venture since I don't have the setup to do something extremely involved. If that were to happen, what sort of things would you be interested in hearing from me? Fill out this form to let me know.

Shoot me a note and let me know how you're doing, what you're reading, or something fun happening in the next few weeks.
