WIP - TCOBS prequel:

I've been promoting unhinged female characters lately... so of course, let's see a snippet of Brela going absolutely feral.

Brela dodged just as a female sprite ran at her. But the crystal woman didn’t give up. With a quick slide, the sprite turned and aimed a long dagger at Brela’s head.

A quick shift of her feet had Brela narrowly avoiding the point. Her arms were quick, punches thrust in what would have been the sensitive wrist and inner arm of a human. It did the trick as the sprite lost her weapon. Brela left it to fall to the sand, but didn’t need it as her elbow slammed into the woman’s back, sending her sprawling into the sand.

The crystal creature didn’t get up, moaning something unintelligible into the sand.

Hmm, so glass spines seemed to be a weak point for the sprites. Good to know.

Her snarl turned up toward Oni. “What the hells is going on? What did you just get me into?”

He grinned, but it was Lenni who answered over his shoulder. “Don’t get knocked out.” She nodded toward the chaos. “And don’t die.”

Brela knelt and picked up the crystal dagger, pointing it toward Oni. “Zaxova,” she hissed. Prick.

Anyone feel this? 100% Brela in The Curse of Broken Shadows. And Farrah. And as I write their prequel story, I feel this even more.

That's something I love about writing fantasy - letting my female characters steal the show. I write my women like most authors have been writing their male leads (you know, the fae bastards that are brilliant and make the female character frustrated, feel out of their depths, but also bring out the best in them). I write my male leads differently - capable, misunderstood, and different (kinda like authors write their female characters), but damn are they going to bow down to their woman and lift them up in every way possible.

Which female fantasy characters do you think have been done well lately? I'm talking the Aelin's and Feyre's (Maas's books) and Casia's (Gaither's books) of the fantasy world.
