7-Figure Weekly - do you know yourself?

Dec 02, 2024 12:06 am

I grew up in a middle-class family with a working father and a stay-at-home mom. We were pretty traditional in the "Leave it to Beaver" sense. I went to college with no clue what I wanted to do, graduated during the Great Recession, struggled for 11 months until I got hired, and took on lots of debt.

I paid off $32,000 of debt by starting a blog, got featured in the press, and worked with big brands like PNC Bank, Chase Bank, Progressive Insurance, and more. I made $30k in one year as a blogger and decided that I wanted to make a million dollars. I started coaching and consulting based on what I had learned about digital marketing and brought in $65k in one year.

It took me about 7 years to generate a million dollars in my business. Then something odd happened–I lost all motivation.

7-Figure Lesson: Knowing yourself is key to long-term success

At first, I thought it was just because I was burned out. I was handling marketing, sales, coaching, operations, and more. But that wasn't the only reason I lost my motivation.

The true reason is because I finally reached my goal. I started my business in October of 2015, and it was June 2022 when I reached the million-dollar mark. Mind you, that was gross revenue accumulated over those 7 years, but that's exactly what I was aiming for.

Once I reached that goal, it was like I stepped over this figurative finish line. Suddenly, I didn't have the same drive I had before.

After a conversation with my mastermind partner, I realized that I'm a builder. I'm the type of person who enjoys a challenge. I love solving a puzzle, but once it's solved, I'm not the one who enjoys operating.

"Know thyself," a phrase inscribed on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, is something every entrepreneur should understand. To know yourself is to understand why certain things work for you better than they work for others. It's a way to figure out if you need to hire out your weaknesses or hire a coach to help build your strengths.

Take Action

- Reflect on your past successes and challenges. What patterns do you notice about the types of work that energize you?

- Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. Consider how you can leverage your strengths and delegate or outsource your weaknesses.

- Set a new goal that aligns with your natural talents and preferences. Break it down into actionable steps and start working towards it.

Final Thoughts:

Knowing that I am a builder has helped me hugely when it comes to the next phase of my career. Find a problem, solve, build, sell. That's my blueprint for success.

What's your optimal path? Do you know yourself?
