Before we move forward to the core of Love and Responsibility we have to tackle this foundational principle for human relationships, which is St. JP2’s major task in his book.

This foundational principle as he defined it is called the “personalist principle.” “a person must not be merely the means to an end for another person” (p. 26). In other words, we should never treat the people in our lives as mere instruments to achieving our own purposes.
