The Nose Knows

With the upcoming release of Psychic in Suburbia on Sept 23, 2025, I thought we could have some fun discussing psychic-stuff this month.
Ever heard of psychic sense of smell? Probably not. It’s not common, and most people would easily find rational excuses if a person smelled something “off.” Honestly, I had never even considered the possibility until…
A couple weeks ago I watched a YouTube video where a woman spritzed something into the air – after research I found it was a healing aura spray. Well, I smelled it! Through my computer screen! And it wasn’t even a live session, it was recorded. I smelled something she sprayed in the air over her head two weeks before I hit the “play” button on YouTube.
What?!?!
This got me to thinking back to other times I smelled something that absolutely was not there. For instance, there are numerous times in my car when I smell cigarette smoke. Actually, it’s more like the odor of someone who smokes and has for years regardless if a cigarette is in their hand or not at the moment – they still carry it on their skin and on their clothes. Now, I don’t smoke. No one in my family smokes. There is no legitimate reason for my car to smell of cigarettes. But the smell wasn’t always there and no one else in the car smelled it. Just me.
The particular odor reminds me of one person, and one person only – my father, who died in 2004 and smoked Marlboros every day of his life since he was fifteen. My car was a 2014 model so…no, he was never physically in my car. But perhaps he was there, in a non-corporeal form.
I did some research after being assured by several people that this was indeed “a thing.” Psychic sense of smell. There are many other names for it – clairalience, clairescence, claireolfactory, clairolfactant, or clairolfaction.
So what exactly is clairalience? It is an extra-sensory perception (ESP) where one is able to smell energy and/or glean psychic information through smell. Some people see energy, others feel energy, and others can hear energy. Why not smell energy?
Some people claim to smell foul odors when around others who are sick or have a lot of negativity within them. Remember the Star Wars: A New Hope line from Princess Leia when she addressed General Tarkin: “I should have expected to find you holding Vader’s leash. I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board.”? Well, that’s fiction, but it would be easy to imagine the evil reek of death around the man, right?
Some smells are signs from the angels. The fragrance of lilacs, roses, or other flowers when they aren’t physically there is reported to be a sign of angels or deceased loved ones visiting you.
I even read where one man can smell a person’s emotions. The man stated that positive emotions are light and flowery. Fear and anger come off as pungent and sour odors.
Psychics, or mediums, can sometimes smell odors associated with places, events, or things. For instance, a medium will catch the scent of freshly baked bread or a wet dog when these smells are connected to someone close to the client who may have passed.
And of course, there is the foul odor we hear about and read about from paranormal investigations. The one smell an investigator does not want to encounter…Sulphur. Yep, if you smell rotten eggs and there’s no kitchen, you are probably experiencing something ghostly, or even demonic. Run, don’t walk, out of that place!
Gifted healers can utilize scent to determine underlying health conditions or dietary issues. Some mediums can smell disease. There’s limited studies in these areas, but if dogs can correctly sniff out 99% of lung cancer samples in one study, it stands to reason an intuitive person could as well.
A psychic sense of smell isn’t so hard to believe considering all the money we throw into the essential oil industry. Certain fragrances can ease tension and stress, relieve headaches, stir up our libido, and ease us to a peaceful slumber. So smell does impact us physically, mentally, and perhaps spiritually.
The next time your nose perks up at an unusual scent in the room, look around. If there’s no basis for the odor, ask yourself – who can it be now?
