I know I'm a wee bit late in publishing the celebratory 250th birthday of the my home country, the United States of America, but I was holding off for a good reason.

That Far Distant Country is a gorgeously written historical fiction with certain romantic elements. The writing style corresponded to the time period to lure the reader into the past of early colonial America with fun insights into well-known historical characters, and some less known. The story itself is replete with adventure, early American history and society (both polished eastern society and less-polished pioneer living), and a coming-of-age story for a young orphan girl as she ventures to find her destiny with plenty of pitfalls placed in her path to happiness. This is not your quintessential romance by any means, but it delicately steps around the more common practices and societal norms of the time period. Readers will be actively engaged in the story and with the authentically drawn characters. The time period is factually constructed so one feels they are immersed in the scenes. The story holds true to the tenets of historical fiction in literature with meticulous research on the author's part to draw authentic and immersive settings ground in historical facts with detailed and accurate descriptions. Characters are well-drawn and authentic to the time period, not based on modern day constructs. The characters come to life on the page and invite the reader to stroll along with them on their adventures and into their everyday lives while providing excitement and suspense to keep the reader engrossed in the story. Overall, this is an excellently written and constructed historical fiction tale.

In short, the author achieves the goal of transporting readers into the time period of early America with historical figures of the time portrayed with traits making them seem truly human and not just what one reads in a history book.
