Fairy tale retellings are trending in the book publishing industry, but trust me when I say these fairy tales are not for the kiddos. No, these are far from the Disney stereotypes. Most retellings are now beyond PG-13 rated to R rated and (I dare say) X rated.

But why are fairy tales trending?

For starters, who doesn't want a Happily Ever After (HEA). You don't have to be a kid to want HEA. In today's world, adults yearn for HEAs more than ever.

Another reason is fairy tales are familiar. They're comfort food for the soul. You don't read a fairy tale retelling for the stressful action or drama like a Jack Reacher novel. You read it because it's easy, it's fun, it's a known commodity.

Fairy tales can be easily retold (changed significantly) because they are (at their roots) quite generic (at least the modern day renditions; I wouldn't say there's anything generic about any tale from the Brothers Grimm).

An author can take a classic fairy tale, spin it around, twist and turn the tale until it's no longer a child's story but a book that makes grown women blush and get hot and bothered.

Regardless of the "why," fairy tale retellings, especially sexy retellings, are all the rage in the romance book industry today. For instance, KF Breene's "A Ruin of Roses: A Deliciously Dark Fairytales series;" "Inked in Ashes: Inkbound series" by Shannon Mayer; "Mountains Made of Glass: Fairytale Retellings series" by Scarlett St. Clair;... the list goes on and on and on and on. I know my e-reader is fully loaded.

Even YA romance is getting in on the action (while not quite as steamy or "detailed"). MK Harkins' "Ashes: Modern-Day Fairy Tale Series" is just one example.

Do all fairy tale retellings have HEAs? I'd wager, YES. But with fairy tale retellings book series, the authors can make you wait with bated breath for that HEA, but they make it oh, so worth it.
