Hi !

takara (walk) with the mountain + learn about the palawa connections to kunanyi

We are beyond excited to let you know that we are partnering with lakapawa lutruwita (the same mob that has been putting on the award-winning wukalina Walk since 2015) at kMR this year!

In a kMR 2023 exclusive offering, they will be taking 2 different guided takara/walks (1.5 hours) on kunanyi across the weekend - including one especially designed for kids/the whole family on Sunday 26 March!

These are perfect for family and friends to do while you're out running with kunanyi, or for the whole family to do as you recover on Sunday!

Join palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) guides, as they lead you through ancient forests and valleys of kunanyi/Mt Wellington, sharing knowledge that spans thousands of generations of connection and kinship.

Come for a takara (walk) and discover how the muwinina and modern palawa care for and continuously connect to this very special place.

The Australia Women's Cricket team recently had their own 'walk with the mountain', so you can watch this video to get a sneak peak of what you're in for! (plus look out for the kMR tech tee!). Click on the image below to watch the video.

kunanyi - more than a mountain

For the palawa, kunanyi is more than a mountain. It is a creative life force that sustains, provides and guides.

And kunanyi Mountain Run is more than a trail run event - it's a trail running AND mountain culture festival.

That's why this year, we've partnered with Ruth Langford, the founder of the Aboriginal social enterprise Nayri Niara, to provide a platform for palawa to share their culture, history and traditional knowledge.

We know that Tasmanians have the highest interest in learning more about Aboriginal culture but have the least access (according to The Australian Council report, Creative Cultures, 2019).

So this is an invitation for you (whether you're a runner, support crew, volunteer or a non-running Hobart local!), to come along and engage, learn and connect.

Watch this space for more exciting announcements on what else will be happening!

Cultural activities at the heart of kMR

We will honour our local custodians and begin kMR 2023 by paying our respects to Elders and milythina/Country. Dancers from pakana kanaplila will return in 2023 to perform a Welcome to Country at 6.30pm.

It will mark the official opening of kMR 2023, but our runHub at Wellesley Park will be open from 12pm on Friday 24 March, with the VK our first run event that afternoon.

Each run on Saturday will also begin with a Smoking Ceremony - this was an extremely powerful experience for runners in 2022, and there will be a ritual calling for guidance and protection of VK runners on Friday.

Smoking ceremonies help cleanse the area and people of bad spirits and promote the protection and well-being of visitors.

Not to be missed! "Connection to Country enhances well-being" Live QnA on Facebook

We're excited to announce our second live QnA of 2023!

Clear your calendars - this is on Wednesday, 1 March at 8pm (Hobart time)!

This is guaranteed to be an eye-opening conversation and we reckon an important one to be part of, as you prepare to run with kunanyi and create your own connections to country.

Ruth and Nathan (and RD Lincoln too) will happily take your questions too and we invite you to share your own connections and sense of belonging when running with kunanyi. If you want to get in early, head to our socials now and pop them in the QnA Event page. The chat will automatically go live on our Facebook page at 8pm, 1 March.

With only 5 weeks to go to #kMR2023, we know runners are starting to really focus on the pointy end. We'll be in touch really soon with info on mandatory gear (and gear checks) as well as more tips from Tassie trail running legend, Hanny Allston - and much more!

Lincoln, Ruth and the rest of the kMR team!
