Kendrick Lamar, Bob Dylan, & Joni Mitchell

image

At the tail end of last week, I was hosting a PD session for a district that was delighted to see that the IB curriculum name-dropped three great singer-songwriters as potential authors of study: Kendrick Lamar, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell.

It was an awesome spectacle to see ..

Fourteen eager ELA teachers

"Bob Ross-ing"

their instruction in order to demystify the writing process for their students

all while pulling the strings of my templates.

I'd like to share with you the literary analysis writing workshop we cobbled together for Dylan's classic song:

A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

And so as not to leave my Language friends out ...

We also did a rhetorical analysis writing workshop of his famous Nobel Prize Speech

During the PD, we also worked on how to teach that pesky line of reasoning "stuff."

In both videos, check out the Button Trick ... it's a super ingenious way to ensure that your students stay cogent in their body paragraphs.

I also just wanted to announce that the next Teach It Write 5-Week Mastermind is beginning the night of January 29th. We will meet for five consecutive weeks starting at 7 EST live in Zoom. Each session is an hour long followed by Q&A. Replays are available.

The cool thing is that I have teamed up with the National Writing Project, so they are able to award PD completion badges of 10 hours.

And for those of you that are just too darn busy for all that PD "stuff," note that we also offer a self-paced course that likewise comes with a 10-hour completion badge.

And as far as Joni and Kendrick go ... we gotta tweak a few things before we add them to the YouTube channel.

Happy teaching and happy writing!
