For my AP Lit. friends who are still grappling with getting students to articulate a clear thesis in their introductions for FRQ 1 & FRQ2, I got something that might help.
Using short films.
In today’s video, we use Matthew A. Cherry’s classic “Hair Love” as our guided text.
It’s beyond poignant and lovely.
As you’ll see in the video, my students practice writing their introductory paragraphs while pulling the strings of my template.
We’re real close to the finish line, but “stuff” is clicking … finally!!

I’ll be wrapping up my academic year soon and folks are asking me what my summer plans are as far as PD course offerings go and other various irons I have in the fire.
First, yes … I’ll be offering the Teach It “Write” 5-Week Mastermind again … probably the end of May after my wedding.
We’ll settle upon time/date in the coming days.
But if you want to take a peek at what the Mastermind entails, visit my webpage at https://teachinghow2write.com/teach-it-write-mastermind/
We are also toying with the idea of offering a series of shorter courses focusing on things such as my Word Study Academy, Nuance Academy, alternative grading methods, and Plato’s Play-Doh Discussion Modality.
More details to follow.
And as always, if you’d like the PowerPoint slides for Hair Love, just send me a quick note.
Happy teaching and happy writing!
