Lots of teachers draw heavily from Thomas C. Foster's seminal text, How to Read Literature Like a Professor" ...
But the conundrum remains ...
How in the world do we actually get students to read like professors?
In today's video, I gamify a number of reading strategies that I have honed over my 20+ year career to help students arrive at two vital questions:
- What is the authorial intent?
- How does the author construct meaning?
Knowing that it's test-prep season, and that many teachers are struggling to get their students to ascertain deep levels of meaning in the texts they assign, I made two videos:
One spotlighting Mary Oliver's "The Black Snake"
And another for Noah S. Sweat's "The Whiskey Speech"
This is a very busy time of year for all of us, so I'm hoping this adds a bit of levity while delivering a furious pedagogical punch.
Happy teaching and happy writing!
