Over the last couple of days, I have shared a few stories with you about the ELA department from Chicago who is currently enrolled in my Masterclass.
They are running a voluntary summer institute for students grade 8-12 who are interested in some enrichment opportunities.
Amazingly, 238 students enrolled!
As in any of my other Masterclasses, we started from the ground up – equipping these students with the basics like punctuation, grammar, syntax – but now we’re moving them toward ways to achieve rhythm, flow and voice – cogent lines of reasoning – the pizzaz that good writers have a natural knack for.
As for implementing and practicing my templates, we started with synthesis writing - and as I mentioned yesterday - we centered our essential question for the lower grade levels around Spongebob Squarepants: does SB have any pedagogical merit for its intended age demographic?
I feel like we duped these kids!
They’re actually having fun while learning the foundational basics of how to do expository writing.
It’s ingenious!
As you begin to set your eyes on the upcoming academic year, I’d like to share this unit with you. Not only is it highly engaging, but it’s producing some fantastic writing.
In my Masterclass library, I have over 150 videos like the ones I’ve produced for Tiger King and SpongeBob.
Teachers love this library because it contains titles for the 65 most commonly taught novels and plays in the American high school curriculum as well as over one hundred videos covering all of the other expository modes.
And the content is engaging!
For synthesis there are units that incorporate MTVs Teen Mom, Parental Control, even All in the Family and MTVs Ghosted.
Let’s say you’re teaching Hamlet or Gatsby.
The library provides for you everything you’ll need to host your writing workshops so that “Bob Ross-ing” your instruction is made easy.
So, hopefully you enjoy this SpongeBob writing workshop and can use it with your students. We certainly got a lot of mileage out of it.

Happy 4th … and happy teaching ... and happy writing!
