Hi ,
In a recent article published in the English Journal, 91% of surveyed secondary ELA teachers attest to having never been taught how to teach composition in their practicums. Further, the average teacher clocks in for an average of a 65-hour workweek.
Therein lies the problem – we weren’t trained to do half of our job responsibilities and we give up too much of our free time trying to keep pace with the demands of our profession.
I never take work home with me. In fact, I leave work at work. On a weekly basis I attend meditation classes, volunteer at a men’s recovery house, take a guitar lesson, home cook meals six out of seven days, go for a four-mile run every day after school – and I’m an involved and active father of two teenagers.
I sacrifice nothing because of the demands of my job.
Two things allow me to do this:
1. My heuristics and templates that I’ve honed over my twenty-year career.
2. The 25 alternative grading practices I use to plow through the endless stack of papers.
Over the years, I have been asked to present my methods to districts and departments, and during our covid hiatus from teaching, I was encouraged to start a Masterclass.
Be a PART of my May 2021 Masterclass!
Happy teaching and happy writing,
