Teach It "Write" Symposium

Let me paint a scene that has occurred in countless ELA classrooms ever since the one-room schoolhouse …

Teacher masterfully elucidates and unpacks all the fine nuance of a classic text … the discussions in class are lively … the insights are brilliant … lightbulbs are illuminating above heads … engagement is high … you’re walking on air feeling as if you got the big “IT” as far as this teaching thing goes.

And then you assign an essay as a culminating assessment and each and every one of your students acts as if they’ve never written an essay before in their lives.

It’s the old deer caught in the proverbial headlights scenario.

This is soul crushing and beyond frustrating.

But there are a number of reasons as to why this occurs:

1.    ELA teachers commonly “assign” writing versus explicitly “teach” it

2.    91% of secondary ELA teachers were never formally taught how to teach writing in their practicums

3.    Students are not being equipped with workable and accessible templates

If these three reasons resonate with you, then my new PD opportunity might be just what you’re looking for.

In the Teach It “Write” Symposium, I will equip teachers with the necessary set of tools to build student writers from the ground up. Beginning with foundational mastery of compositional basics, we will then proceed toward getting your students to write cogently with voice, rhythm, and flow. With three workable and accessible templates that can be used across the expository modes, the process of writing will be demystified in a manner that allows students to intuitively know how to capture their thinking on paper without second guessing.

ELA teachers know what it feels like to be burnt out to a crisp.

And there are a number of reasons for this as well:

1.    We don’t witness enough growth or maturation in our student writers

2.    We are chronically grading essays

3.    The demands of lesson planning are crushing

The Teach It “Write” Symposium has an answer for all of the above.

Over a five-week period, we will meet every Sunday night live in Zoom starting at 7 EST. The first session starts this Sunday the 24th. During our time together, you will principally learn how to incorporate my three templates into your instructional practices while also learning my 40 alternatives to traditional grading.
