In no other words … the sheer volume of grading we are tasked to do as ELA teachers just plain old sucks.
Not only do we sacrifice our evenings and weekends grading the endless heap, but traditional grading methods do nothing whatsoever to help our students grow and mature as writers.
Ever since the one-room school house, most teachers have followed a singular paradigm that looks like this:
kid submits paper; it sits in a tall stack of other papers for weeks; teacher builds up the gumption to finally grade; teacher squeezes a ton of comments into the margin of each paper … slaps a grade on it … returns paper to student … and student doesn’t even read the comments …
A whole bunch of time wasted.
And the kicker - the teacher never sees any improvement in that student writer.
There is a completely different way of grading papers.
Over my twenty-year career, I have developed 40 alternatives to traditional grading.
In the following video, I present one that I call “100, 90, 80, 70 Roulette.”
If you’d like to get through a stack of papers in about 60 minutes and actually get your students to learn a ton about writing, check it out.
In the coming weeks, I will be offering a free webinar on my other approaches through Perfection Learning.
Stay tuned … we’re hammering out the details.
Hopefully this single alternative to traditional grading can free you up this weekend.
