A common trait among our struggling and emerging writers is that they clobber us over the head with independent clauses and short-simple-declarative sentences.
Hence the droning rhythm and choppy flow.
To combat this tendency, I explicitly teach the 12 sentence types along with the 20 sentence-styling patterns.
In today's instructional video, I have a ViewMaster lesson on patterns 6-10.
It's a ready-made lesson plan for you -- load up YouTube -- and let me have at it.
Sit back and watch your students give it a whirl.
I've been doing these exercises for 20+ years, and a few things are apparent:
- Both my Lang. and Lit. students earn the elusive sophistication point at a rate well above the national average
- My on-level students grow and mature exponentially in their ability to write once they grasp the concepts behind these patterns
- My students really hone their voice, rhythm, flow through exercises like this one
- To create next-level writers, these skills are a must
In my YouTube channel, you will also find a video for patterns 1-5.
And in the coming days, I'll create content to get us all the way through all 20 patterns.
Happy teaching and happy writing!
