Hi ,
We give up our evenings, even entire weekends, to sludge through endless stacks of essays that beckon us to be graded.
But in doing so, we do not witness much growth and maturation in our student writers.
Here are the reasons why:
1.Traditional grading methods don’t work. In fact, when we play the role of “red-ink-hawks,” we engage in utter futility. We could put a million comments on each student draft, but still, students will not improve as writers.
- My Masterclass provides you with 25 alternative ways to traditional grading practices. Not only will your students flourish by transferring the onus of learning onto their shoulders, but you will reclaim your lives and free up your evenings and weekends. But of greater importance, you will witness your students flourish
2.Teachers “assign” writing versus explicitly “teaching” composition.
- In my Masterclass, teachers learn how to “Bob Ross” their instruction. Students learn best when teachers “paint” with them. As such, when teachers provide plenty of exemplars and models, students have something concrete to scaffold their learning
3.Students need templates and heuristics to structure their writing.
- In order to get students to think on paper, they need to be provided with structural templates and heuristics. In my Masterclass, teachers will learn how two simple templates can be used across all of the expository modes. The craft of writing becomes demystified as students learn to write cogently and with alacrity.
4.91% of secondary ELA teachers were never taught how to teach composition in their practicums.
- As such, most of us have floundered as writing instructors. There is an art to teaching composition, and my Masterclass will equip you with all the tools you’ll need to become a skilled writing instructor
5.Teachers are overburdened by the demands of their course load responsibilities
- In taking my Masterclass, teachers have access to a library of more than 125 writing workshop videos. Each video is accompanied by an editable PowerPoint. Approximately 30 minutes long, each video features me “painting” my way through an essay for both the teacher and the student. The library is growing on a weekly basis. At present, there are writing workshop videos for the 50 most commonly taught novels and plays in the American high school curriculum.
