Imagine an instance whereby the likes of a William Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, or Eugene O'Neill were applying to your top-choice school.
How would they approach their college personal statement?
Well, I think they'd employ the heuristic that has garnered them the success they've received as playwrights: the 3 act structure.
To add nuance and flair, I advise my students to pull the strings of this frame - so in other words, their piece contain the following components: the setup, the confrontation, and the resolution.
To model this concept, I breakdown a personal statement that one of my former students wrote that got him into all of his top-choice schools (he decided upon Princeton).
From start to finish, you'll see firsthand how this narrative technique can yield a real banger of a college personal statement.
