National Hispanic Heritage Month: Poetry Workshop

image

Today marks the beginning of my 20th year in the classroom, and I am locked and loaded with some exciting units and projects that I'm eager to jump into.

Engagement, for many of us last year, was elusive and hard to come upon.

But I am hoping that the content I have shared this summer ignites a collective spark of intellectual curiosity in our students.

As far as my lesson planning goes, I'm diving into poetry with my sophomores and AP Lit. students.

And the cool thing - the unit corresponds with National Hispanic Heritage Month!

In today's writing workshop video, I yet again "Bob Ross" my instruction and "paint" a ton of intros and bodies for you and your students demonstrating how to pull the strings of my templates.

Given that my workshop features poems by Martin Espada and Jimmy Santiago Baca, students cannot base their papers on these pieces.

This cuts down on the mimicry and copy-cat-ism.

Students have a packet of poems stuffed to the gills with excellent and diverse content to choose from.

Here's something super cool about this particular writing workshop ...

All of the exemplars and models were written by my NWP teacher participants for the benefit of your students.

Our next Teach It Write 5-Week Mastermind will begin the evening of September 25th at 7 EST and run for five consecutive weeks.

Even though the course meets for a total of five hours, the National Writing Project assigns a PD badge indicating completion of ten hours.

If you'd like any of the content featured in the video, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Happy teaching and happy writing!
