Ever tried to explain how to annotate without watching students’ eyes glaze over? 👀
This activity makes annotation click.
Here’s the setup: students get a blank check (because we bankroll!) and fill their Amazon cart with any five items they want. 🛒 They hand the list to a classmate, who has to annotate the list like a text dive—what do the choices reveal? what themes pop up? what’s implied but not said? Then, the annotator writes a two-paragraph essay sketching out the essence of their peer.
It’s scaffolded, it’s fun, and it gets kids past “highlighting random stuff” into the real work of annotation: inference, interpretation, and voice.
