ELA teachers, ever feel like “complexity” is the slipperiest term on your rubric? One day it means paradox, another day ambiguity, the next day “just don’t oversimplify.”
In my latest YouTube video, I bring complexity down to earth with five classroom-ready activities you can use tomorrow:
1️⃣ The Optical Illusion Approach – Show how the same image (or passage) can reveal multiple readings depending on perspective.
2️⃣ The Playlist Metaphor – Students curate a “tracklist” of competing themes or tensions, proving that texts can carry more than one beat at once.
3️⃣ The Recipe Twist – Take a simple “ingredient list” (symbols, motifs, devices) and remix it to see how adding or removing one changes the flavor of interpretation.
4️⃣ Two Truths, One Text – Students craft two equally valid claims about a passage, then wrestle with how both can coexist.
5️⃣ The Color-Mixing Demo – Blend two highlighters to make a third shade—an instant metaphor for synthesis and the both/and nature of literary meaning.
The goal: get students to stop hunting for “the right answer” and instead learn to responsibly balance tensions, paradoxes, and ambiguities in their writing.
Watch me model the whole process (yes, I “Bob Ross” the process right on screen):
