Regarding the fact that AP scores were released the other day ....
When do you know if it is your teaching, the test, or the students?
How do you tell the difference?
But I have a different question ![]()
To what extent does it come down to the templates you equip your students with?
Across the nation, scores were lower this year than in years past.
Although the College Board has not forthrightly said this, the writing is on the wall – in order for the CB to stay relevant and profit, standards need to become more stringent, hence the lower qualification rates. Only the best will receive college credit, and that’s exactly what colleges and universities expect from these standardized exams – a high standard exam.
I by all means do not want to toot my horn, but my students did very well this year, and I attribute it to the templates I teach them to use.
The other week I offered a webinar that debriefed the 2021 AP Literature Exam and I demonstrated for 200 teachers how my students manipulated my templates and heuristics to craft each FRQ.
And these teachers understood – to develop that clear line of reasoning with ample textual support and analysis, a template is needed to create cogency on paper.
In my Masterclass, I teach teachers how to equip their students with the foundational basics and then we build those writers until they achieve the finer nuances of voice, rhythm, and flow.
From there we equip the students with the declarative and inverted thesis, as well as the syllogistic method, to craft each introductory and body paragraph a student ever writes.
The templates are universal and can be used across the expository modes.
Good writing = good thinking!
And the Masterclass teaches teachers how to teach writing so that the writing process is demystified for our students.
What if I told you that I had 78 students take the Language exam and 69 qualified?
And what if I told you that I had 46 students take the Literature exam and 39 qualified?
This is true … in a school where we have 39 countries represented and a very diverse socioeconomic makeup.
It’s my templates!
But the Masterclass is for all secondary teachers, not just AP teachers.
Our next Masterclass will begin on August 8th.
