I think I may have the perfect exercise to get our struggling and emerging writers from exclusively using the short-simple-declarative sentence.
Here's the kicker - in order to break away from that droning "da-da-da" rhythm in their lack of flow, students have to be able to wield a variety of sentence patterns.
In this exercise, I have created a Mad Libs that builds their familiarity with all 20 patterns.
To help demystify the process, I created a super concise user-manual that defines each pattern while providing four concrete examples across the board.
It's free ... just scroll down a tad bit in the video's description.
So, in this letter - just to give you a sense - I may omit a sentence and say something like "Insert pattern #14 here."
This is a great way to see firsthand how patterns create voice, rhythm, and flow.
The slides featured in the video are also available for free.
These exercises are perfect bell ringers.
I'll be making more in the coming days and weeks.
Happy teaching and happy writing!
