If you really think about it, nowhere in our teaching contracts does it say anything about compulsory unpaid overtime.
Yet, secondary ELA teachers, on average – put in 60-hour work weeks.
And for what reasons are we taking time away from our families and the things that we love doing?
Well, we all know the answer.
It’s because of traditional grading methods and practices.
There is always a heaping stack of papers that “NEED” to be graded!
I felt so cornered by this reality early in my career.
But I get rather feral when I feel trapped, so I thought of ways to free myself from the endless stress of constantly being tasked to grade student essays.
I’ve shared a few of these approaches with you over the last week, and I hope that you are beginning to see that there is a totally far better way to approach this part of our job.
I’m not putting myself on a pedestal when I say what I’m going to say to you …
But I haven’t taken any work home with me for years.
I love my students, but I have erected some personal boundaries to keep my life in balance.
When I leave for the day or weekend, I have a thing called “LIFE” that I’m doing.
I don’t want to devote my evenings and weekends to grading.
I want to do the things that make me happy and sane!
So, if you’re looking for a new way of doing things, I invite you to attend my Alternative Grading Methods Two-Hour Intensive on November 13th starting at 11 a.m. EST.
During this session, we will explore a wide array of my alternative methods. And … to boot … show up with a stack of papers and have them graded within 30 minutes.

Happy teaching and happy writing!
