Hypertensive Old Lady + Marketing Lesson

It sounded trivial and l probably took it lightly because I already knew how these things went, 


And so it wasn't surprising when I heard about it. 


But when this elderly woman in my church told me that her body was still shivering since yesterday and that she still hadn't gotten herself yet, 


That was when I realized just how serious it must have been for her, along with a few lessons which I will share later on in this mail. 


But first, let me give you a bit of background story yeah? 


Let's do it. 


It was just a few minutes to the close of Bible study service in church today,


When this elderly woman stood up and made to leave for home because it had gotten dark and she couldn't (or didn't want to) walk home alone in dark.


As she was walking through the auditorium, I saw her mumble some words to someone and I heard my name, 


After which both she and the person looked in my direction, confirming that I was the person she was asking for.


As she got close to me, she signaled for me to come with her as she exited the church and I followed her to the gate. 


After ransacking her bag for some minutes trying to bring out what I would later discover to be her ATM card and a piece of paper to give to me (while blaming the devil for her "misfortune" a few times),


She began to explain to me what had happened to her and what she wanted me to do for her.


It happened that she was called by someone who claimed to be from her bank. 


According to her, the person mentioned her name, her date of birth and some personal information to her and then proceeded to tell her that he wanted to do something for her from the bank which would require her to provide him with the digits of her atm card. 


She honestly thought he was really from her bank because of the way he spoke and how authentic he sounded especially since he knew her name and personal details,


And so she innocently provided him with the information he asked for. 


It was not until she spoke with her daughter later that she realized just how grave the consequences of that action could be for her. 


Luckily for her, that account was empty, so she quickly went to the bank to get the ATM card blocked. 


For reasons I can't seem to understand, she said the bank attendants and even the bank manager refused to help her to block the ATM card. 


They instead gave her the code used for blocking ATM cards and insisted that she do it herself, or that she asked someone she trusted to do it for her. 


That was when she remembered that she knew someone in church who she trusted and could get it done for her. 


Which was why she called me out of church to help her block the ATM card. 


When I thought about the whole scenario, I realized some things which I have highlighted below. 



1. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. 


No knowledge is too small or useless to anyone. 


Some of the knowledge that we think is trivial or common knowledge, may not be known at all by some people. 


I knew from mine and other people's experience that anybody who calls you claiming to be from your bank is nothing but a scammer. 


But because this old woman hadn't experienced it before and hence didn't have that knowledge, she fell for it. 


That's why you shouldn't hold back any knowledge you have. Someone out there may need it, no matter how simple or common it may seem. 


Educate other people. No knowledge is ever wasted as the saying goes. 



2. CORRECT POSITIONING BUILDS TRUST. 


The scammer who called the old woman got her to trust him because he positioned himself correctly.


In the KLT formula for selling to people, the third letter T stands for Trust. 


People can know you and like you and still not buy from you. 


People don't necessarily need to like you or be your friend for them to buy from you.  


Read that again!


But once you can get people to trust you, they will definitely be comfortable with giving you their money, because they know you will deliver on your word. 


And one of the best ways to build trust is by correct positioning. 


If you position yourself as an authority in your niche or industry, people will be more likely to trust what you say rather than what other people say. 


A very effective way to position yourself correctly and build trust is by dishing out valuable and relevant content regularly on your social media platforms or wherever your audience are gathered. 


Do this often, and pretty soon, you will have an audience that trust you and are ready to buy from you everytime. 


3. TRUST WILL ALWAYS GIVE YOU REPEAT CUSTOMERS.


The reason why the old woman remembered that she could trust me is because I had done some things for her in the past. 


If I hadn't done those things well, she would have no reason to come to me again. 


If you can built trust with your prospects and customers, repeat business is a given. 


People who buy from you will always come back to buy the same or other of your products. 


And even better, they will refer their friends and family members to buy from you. 


Simply because they trust you and know you will deliver. 


This is why you should always strive to deliver excellent products and provide excellent services. 


This way, you will build more trust quickly. 


And it will give you the confidence to market your product or service like no man's business.


I hope you learnt a thing of two from this mail.
