Avoid these mistakes if you want to write better copy.

When I started out with copywriting, I was terrible at it.
But now I can churn out a good amount of decent copy without stress.
And no, I didn't get here in a day.
Plus I made a lot of mistakes in my learning journey.
Chances are, if you avoid these mistakes...
You will be able to write better copy for your business and offers or even for your client.
Here are 5 mistakes I made as a beginner copywriter that you should avoid.
1. Writing before research.
Many new copywriters make this mistake.
I did too when I just started out.
You see a product and you decide to write a copy for it without conducting any prior research.
This is usually caused by the excitement to practice what you have learnt...
But writing without conducting research is the fastest way to writing terrible copy.
Because a good copy must address your reader's deepest:
• Fears
• Pain points
• Desires
• Goals and aspirations
And so on.
And you can't find them out without conducting research.
You may think you know these things, but you'll be surprised that you're wrong.
Research also gives you insight into your target market so that you can understand:
• Their Awareness level
• The Market sophistication
• What your competition is doing
With the information you get from research, you can go ahead to craft your:
• Unique mechanism
• Big idea
• Emotionally Compelling Primary Promise
All of these is what makes your copy stand out and convert like crazy.
I have explained some of these things in my previous emails.
And maybe sometime in the future, I will revisit them.
2. Using negative trigger words.
There are some words that kill your copy on arrival.
And no it's not because the words are evil.
But because they have been overused in the marketing world...
And people don't respond well to them anymore.
That's why they are called trigger words.
Words like
• Finally Revealed
• Secrets
• Free
• Etc
Avoid using these words in your copy if you can.
3. Writing about features instead of benefits.
Many copywriters go on and on about the features the product they are writing for has to offer.
But your reader doesn't really care about what features the product has.
She only cares about what the product can do for her.
Which is ==> The benefits.
Example of feature:
This new Oraimo airpod has active noise cancelation.
Benefit:
The active noise cancelation feature of the new Oraimo airpod let's you escape all the distractions around you and focus on doing what brings you joy.
See the difference?
Good.
Don't ignore the features, but translate those features into benefits for your reader.
4. Using big vocabulary.
Before I became a copywriter, I used to pride myself in speaking and writing big vocabulary.
But when I started copywriting, it became a problem.
Believe it or not, not everyone understands "big grammar".
Using big vocabulary = confusing your reader.
And confused people don't buy anything.
The earlier you learn this, the faster you will begin to write better copy.
Write in simple English.
Don't insult your reader's intelligence by dumbing down your writing too much.
But write in a way that a ten year old can easily understand.
Hint: Don't jumble your words and sentences together.
Use white spacing and arrange your words in a way that it is easier for your reader to read through without getting tired.
The same way I space all the words in my emails so that you can find it easy to read through.
Got it?
Good.
5. Not upgrading your knowledge.
Many people learn copywriting from one course or training or and think that's all they need.
Truth is learning never stops.
And if you limit yourself to one training, then you will only be as good as the training is.
One thing that helped me to improve my skills quickly is that...
I kept paying for more courses and live trainings on copywriting and marketing.
And before long, I gained more and more knowledge.
And my skills automatically improved.
If you avoid these mistakes in your copy journey,
You will grow your copy chops quickly and start churning out great copy in no time.
To recap, here are the 5 mistakes you want to avoid as a newbie copywriter.
