Why do Nigerians behave like this?

Jul 22, 2023 11:11 am

There is something crazy Nigerians do that always amazes me every single time.

And I don't know if this is what makes us survive.

But no matter how hard things get, Nigerians somehow still survive.

And I don't know if this thing that they do is the reason behind it.

This is something you probably do too without even realizing it.

And I will tell you what it is in just a few moments.

But first, remember what I told you that I read in a book yesterday?

Let's get that out of the way, yeah?

Good.

So according to the book, a late psychologist and philosopher named Abraham Maslow believed that every human has a hierarchy of needs that must be satisfied.

Those needs can range from...

Physiological needs such as air, food and water,

To emotional needs such as love, esteem and self fulfillment.

According to Maslow, as each level of need is met, we move to the next higher level of need.

But then if a person's current level of needs (especially primary needs like food, shelter, clothing, etc) are not met,

Then they will most likely stay focused on meeting those needs without even bothering about the higher level of needs.

For example, someone who doesn't have a place to sleep would probably not be focused on getting a good education.

A person who can't afford to eat probably won't care if he wears fine clothes or not.*

Heck a person who lacks a home, good food and sleeps out in the cold at night couldn't be bothered if he is intelligent or not.

And the reason is simple.

Without those primary needs being fulfilled, you won't be able to even think about those higher needs...

Let alone trying to meet them.

But as you will observe in most people who already have their primary needs met,

That's when they begin to focus on other needs...

Such as safety, self worth, self esteem, status, recognition, fulfillment and the likes.

If you observe very well...

Most rich people, and I mean stinkingly rich people...

Don't derive happiness from their riches anymore.

Probably when they first got their wealth (or at the beginning of their lives for those who were born into wealth), they must have loved it.

But overtime, because all their primary needs have been met,

They begin to look for ways to meet their other needs so that they can have that sense of fulfillment and purpose that money can no longer give them.

That's why you see someone like Elon Musk trying to colonize Mars.

He has so much money that the money doesn't move him anymore.

And so he begins to look for something to give him that sense of fulfilment and joy and greatness.

What's the main lesson here?

If you don't have your basic needs met, you will struggle to succeed in some things.

For example, if you're hungry and you don't have food to eat...

If someone tells you to try and start a business or come up with creative ideas to solve a problem,

You probably won't be interested...

Heck you won't even be able to do it...

Not just because you don't have the resources or intelligence to pull it off.

But mainly because your basic needs of food and money have not been met.

And you won't even be able to think straight in the first place.

So you need to try really hard to make sure you have those basic needs met.

If you need to, get a job.

Try to get something going for yourself.

That way, you will be able to think properly and come up with effective strategies to improve your life and your finances...

Either by learning a High-income skill or by starting a profitable business.

Does that make sense?

Good.

Meanwhile here's the crazy thing Nigerians do that amazes me every single time.

No matter what happens in this country...

Whether it is the hiking of fuel price or increase in transportation, or increase in dollar rate, or even the sudden increase in the price of goods in the market,

One thing is always common about the response of Nigerians...

Especially on social media.

And what's that?

Nigerians will always make sure they catch cruise with the matter and make a huge fun out of the whole scenario.

And it doesn't matter how bad it is.

In fact sometimes, you will begin to wonder if they are really being affected by all the happenings.

Case in point:

This morning, my school Unilag announced an outrageous increase in the school fees from 20k to 140k+ and some other expenses...

Which is over 7X of the previous amount.

And you would think the students would be brainstorming on how to negotiate with the school authority...

And get them to come to a compromise and bring down the price.

But instead of that, memes have been flying up and down since morning.

In fact if you go on Twitter, you will have a good laugh with all the funny content out there.

I have laughed enough myself, even though it affects me too.

But then why do you think that is?

Why do you think Nigerians behave this way?

Is it just a coping mechanism or is there something else to it?

Talk to me... I want to hear from you.

Meanwhile, have a good night's rest.
